Best Bike in Africa 2015: #13 Cannondale Slate Ultegra

The Best Bike in Africa will be held at the 2015 Standard Bank Africa Cycle Fair on 23 – 25 October at St Stithians College, Johannesburg. The competition invites fair visitors to vote for their favourite bike at the Best Bike in Africa stand. All the entrants that vote for the bike that wins the Best Bike in Africa will go into a draw to win the bike. Leading up to the fair, we’ll be be revealing the bikes entered in the Best Bike in Africa. One for the gravel adventurers, the Cannondale Slate Ultegra.

Cannondale look to further blur the lines between tar and dirt with the Slate. The Slate is a mixture of technologies with the Lefty Oliver fork providing 30mm of travel, 650b road wheels with 42c tires, a Syntace 142X12 thru-axle and provision for an internally routed dropper seatpost.

This does seem like quite an odd mix.

 

Indeed. I can see the utility of gravel / cycle-cross bikes if you need to do a few kilometers of jeep track or dirt roads on your predominantly road commute or training ride - e.g. Spec Diverge or Giant TCX, but once it gets rougher than that and you need suspension for corrugations etc. why not buy a hardtail 29er MTB with narrowish tires?

The Slate falls under Cannondale's "New Road", the top version looks pretty amazing, 1 x 11 with a 44T in front:

Still, I'm keen to put drop handlebars on a MTB hard tail! ;)
