Fox announce Proframe light weight full face helmet for all mountain riding

· By Press Office · 11 comments

Fox Racing is proud to announce the release of the all-new Proframe helmet, on sale worldwide Friday, March 3rd, 2017.

Designed to seamlessly blend the worlds of protection and breathability, the Proframe ushers in a new era of confidence inspiring performance for the All Mountain trail rider. The key feature allowing for this hybrid performance is the patent pending Fox integrated chin bar. This offers certified downhill level protection while maintaining nearly open face airflow, lightweight climbing breathability, and full-face protection for aggressive descending. Combined with the proven Fox Varizorb multi-density EPS and 24 total vents, the Proframe is one of the lightest full-face helmets in the world today.

Our downhill DNA sparked the creation of our first ever All Mountain focused full-face helmet. Over 2 years in the development process, the Proframe has been tested and proven by our elite team of Mountain Bike athletes. You’ll see it showcased in our upcoming full-length movie and throughout the year in races all over the world. We are excited to launch such an amazing new product, which brings the Iconic Fox attitude and aggressiveness to the world of trail riding.

This looks great. But at 750 grams its only 200 grams lighter than my fullface. While its a significant improvement for something you wear on your head. A 200 gram saving is hardly enough for it to be touted as an all day climb friendly full face. Not when its STILL double the weight of any half lid.

And at R5,400? I'd rather have the versatility of a convertible lid.

I'd buy it if it was around R3250 (US$249), but in SA we get always get screwed.

Yeah, and the false sense of safety they give you is also priceless.

Only one of those sumo wrestling suits could, maybe, do that for me.

Import duty on helmets doesn't help...

Agreed, but here's what I don't understand:

Fox MSRP US$249 = ~R3250

R3250 + 25% Duty + 14% VAT + 10% SARS = R4688

This is still R700 cheaper than buying it locally. Surely the SA wholesaler doesn't buy these at recommended retail price from Fox?

Launch special is R4500 if that counts. Bicycle stuff isn't cheap in ZA.

How many R700's do you need to make to pay for warehousing, warranty, carrying stock, staff, advertising, taxes, electricity, etc, etc, etc.

Re-calculate using the cost price the wholesaler pays and that R700 probably triples. However, I understand they don't sell thousands of these and have all the above you mentioned to pay for.

Edit: Just had a thought on supporting/buying local vs buying from overseas. Hypothetically speaking what if everything was priced here the same as what it would cost to import? Everyone would buy local, local market will do better, more entrants into the market bringing in products that aren't currently available in SA. I should probably stop dreaming now.
