RockShox today announced two all-new SID SL and SID cross-country forks and a race-focused SIDLuxe shock.

There is a somewhat revived model naming convention to differentiate the two new chassis. The SID SL model features a lightweight chassis with 100mm travel and 32mm upper tube measurements and a claimed weight of 1326g. The SID model promises to be more capable on the trails with longer 120mm travel and stiffer 35mm upper tubes. The bigger chassis does weigh a couple hundred grams more at 1537g.

Discover all the technical details about the new SIDs and SIDLuxe shock in the press release below.

Frequently Asked Questions

SID SL

How has the chassis changed from MY20 SID?
SID SL has a brand-new chassis with all new lowers, upper tubes, crown, and steerer tube. Architecturally, SID SL is narrower than the current SID to reduce weight. The entire fork is lighter than the current SID forks. The MY21 SID SL Ultimate is 166g lighter than the current SID Ultimate Carbon.

What are the differences between SID and SID SL? How do I know which one I should buy?
If you want the lightest fork over everything else, and your bike is designed for 100mm of travel, then SID SL is the fork for your needs. However, if you want your bike to be more capable over rough terrain and look aesthetically more aggressive, SID is the fork for you. The SID (35mm) provides more travel and a stiffer chassis but is a little heavier than the SID SL. Riders that have a bike that is designed for 100mm of travel can also use the SID if they choose.

Can you explain why there is no 27.5″ options for SID? Will you make any in the future?
We have seen a dramatic drop-off of the use of 27.5″ wheels on shorter travel bikes. We looked at market data closely and determined that 27.5″ options are not required for XC bikes.

What have you done to the chassis to ensure the fork is XC race weight?
The SID SL chassis is all new and every piece was designed to be as light as possible and still deliver appropriate stiffness for XC riding/racing. Weight savings primarily come from the new lower legs, CSU, and Charger Race Day damper.

Why are you no longer using a carbon crown/steerer on SID SL?
Carbon parts take a lot of time to develop and we focused on the alloy crowns first. In looking at what we accomplished with aluminum, it will take more research to understand if we can achieve any performance or weight improvements with a carbon CSU. On SID SL Ultimate models, we are machining the crowns and anodizing them for better aesthetics and a small weight reduction.

Are the lower leg seals different to MY20 SID SL forks?
Yes, we have upgraded to SKF wiper seals on all SID forks.

Is the (Charger Race Day Damper – 32mm) damper backwards compatible to current 32mm forks such as SID?
Yes, the Charger Race Day damper is backwards compatible with all 100-120mm SID and Reba forks back to MY14.

What are the different types of Charger Race Day dampers available on SID SL Ultimate?
Charger Race Day in either crown or remote adjust.

What are the Charger Race Day damper adjustments available on SID SL Ultimate?
All of the forks feature a two-position compression – open and lock, and low-speed rebound compression. Forks are also available with TwistLoc remote option.

SID

How has the chassis changed from MY20 SID?
Every piece of the MY21 SID chassis is new. Most notably we used 35mm upper tubes to provide more stiffness and a more aggressive aesthetics on XC bikes. Every gram is accounted for and all of the pieces together provide the best combination of weight and stiffness for 120mm bikes all with a striking new look.

Can you explain why there is no 27.5″ options for SID. Will you make any in the future?
We have seen a dramatic drop-off of the use of 27.5″ wheels on shorter travel bikes. We look at market data closely and determined that 27.5″ options are not required for XC bikes.

Can you explain how you came to the decision to only use a 44mm offset?
Many of our product development decisions are driven by data. It’s clear that most of the industry is moving to shorter offsets for all bikes. We made the decision to keep the offering simple and only offer one offset that will work on most, if not all, XC bikes. If your bike is designed around a 51mm OS, the 44mm OS will only slightly change the handling characteristics of your bike by increasing the mechanical trail and making the bike more stable at high speeds and on descents.

Why are you no longer using a carbon crown/steerer on SID?
Carbon parts take a lot of time to develop and we focused on the alloy crowns first. In looking what we accomplished with aluminium, it will take a lot more research to understand if we can achieve any performance or weight improvements with a carbon CSU. On SID Ultimate models, we are machining the crowns and anodizing them for better aesthetics and a small weight reduction.

How have you increased the performance and reduced friction in the fork?
We have continually worked on developing better alignment between the CSU and the lower legs. We are laser focused on bushing sizing. Additionally, we moved to a lower friction SKF wiper seal. The Charger Race Day damper also inherently has less friction than the rest of our cartridge dampers.

What are the user benefits of Maxima Plush Fluids?
Maxima Plush damping fluid is the most advanced fluid we could find. Primarily, the fluid reduces friction and extends seal life. We have confirmed this with extensive in-house testing. Additionally, there are elements in the fluid that ensure that damping is consistent over a much wider operating temperature range than standard damping fluids. Finally, the fluid helps reduce damper noise during a dampers use on top of the terrain hit after hit.

What are the changes to the new DebonAir air spring?
There are several developments on the new DebonAir spring. First, we moved the dimple lower in the upper tube to swap at top out making the fork ride higher in its travel. We also changed the shape and size to be closer to Pike and Lyrik. We also changed the same top out bumper that we use in Pike and Lyrik as well. We have added a custom shaped cup that captures the top out bumper that allows us to tune the way it feels. Finally, we made the seal head smaller and lighter. All of these things together create the feel of the air spring that we wanted for XC riding.

How exactly is the new DebonAir air spring tuned to suit XC riders? Negative to positive ratio compared to trail and enduro ratios?
The tune we chose is similar to what we have in Pike and Lyrik. The difference is in the designed-in ride height. Depending on set up, Pike and Lyrik have a ride height of 25-35% sag. SID is in the neighbourhood of 15-25%. This is an intentional difference based on the intended use and the amount of travel. Because there is less travel, we want more of it available for use than a longer travel fork.

Is the new DebonAir air spring backwards compatible to previous generation SID forks?
No. As SID is a new 35mm chassis, the air spring will not fit previous 32mm generation SID forks.

How much does the Charger Race Day damper weigh? And what is the weight compared to MY20 SID damper?
MY21 Charger Race Day Damper – 35mm 96g
MY21 Charger Race Day Damper – 32mm 88g
MY20 SID Charger 2 RLC Damper 186g

Is the (Charger Race Day damper – 35mm) damper backwards compatible to current 35mm forks such as Pike or Lyrik at 120mm?
No, the 35mm Charger Race Day damper is not backwards compatible with any of our current 35mm forks. An upgrade kit will be available for riders who have a SID Select or Select+ who want to upgrade to the Charger Race Day damper.

How have you reduced the overall weight of the Charger Race Day damper so significantly?
Primarily, the weight savings is a result from every part being smaller and using less fluid. Additionally, we looked at every piece and asked how it could be lighter. The heavily machined top cap is an excellent example of this.

What compression and rebound adjustments are on the Charger Race Day damper?
All of the forks feature a two-position compression – open and lock, and low-speed rebound compression. Forks are also available with TwistLoc remote option.

Are there differences in the tune on 32 and 35mm SID?
Both are geared for XC bikes so we wanted the damper characteristics to be the same. With shorter travel platforms such as SID, there is less need for multiple damping adjustments, especially on the High Speed compression and rebound side.

SIDLuxe

Which bikes will I find with SIDLuxe Ultimate shock specification?
There will be extensive specification of both SIDLuxe Ultimate and Select+ on OEM equipped bikes. Many of these will be launching in the coming months.

Can I buy SIDLuxe for my current XC bike – what is the planned AM availability?
We will have several OEM model specific versions as well as a robust offering of generic tunes and sizes that can be re-tuned to fit our customer’s needs.

What are the colour options available for SIDLuxe?
SIDLuxe Select+ is available in Black. SIDLuxe Ultimate is available in Black and SID Blue.

How have you made the shock lighter than the competition?
To deliver the lightest RockShox shock offering, we made SIDLuxe shocks as small as possible while maintaining the performance our riders and racers would expect – smaller means less materials, therefore less weight. Smaller means less air volume too which is suited to XC requirements.

The shock is so small – how does this affect the air spring characteristics?
Due to the size of the shock, the air volume is smaller. Meaning we can make shocks with a supple ‘off the top’ initial stroke, and a progressive air spring through the stroke, with plenty of bottom out control for the bigger hits. Perfectly suited for XC needs.

Is the positive air spring adjustable?
The positive air spring can be adjusted with tokens similarly to our other shock offerings. 0, 1 or 2 blue tokens can be installed easily into the air can to tune the air spring to a rider’s needs.

How would you describe the damper tune on the shock?
The damper is tuned to cater for a wide range of leverage curves on XC race bikes. Great ‘off the top’ with lots of control on bigger hits. We built the shock knowing that we would have a more progressive air spring due to a smaller volume. In turn this means we could use a lighter tune to deliver the same characteristics that our riders would expect. Supple, supportive and a super firm lockout when needed. The lockout feature requires very little force to switch between open and a super stiff lock.

Do I need to use a tool to adjust rebound settings on the shock?
In order to deliver the lightest possible shocks, we saved weight in every area we could. Removing the compression adjustment knobs and mechanisms, and replacing with tooled options saved notable weight on each shock. SID and SID SL forks have a removable rebound adjustment knob which is used to adjust the settings on SIDLuxe shocks.

As the shock is smaller and lighter, can we expect it to heat up quicker?
During testing we found that the new SIDLuxe shocks were able to maintain normal damping and air spring characteristics in racing conditions.

Why haven’t you made a three-position shock?
We’re always listening and developing shocks to suit our customers’ needs. The current and most pressing ask has been for a lighter shock suited to XC needs with an extra firm lockout and an open setting for maximum control and traction.

What sizing and mounting configurations is it available in?
Available in standard and trunnion mount. Shocks are available up to 50mm of stroke across the sizes required by our OEM partners.

Are SID shocks tuneable by service centres?
Absolutely. While we will be offering many OEM specification shocks, we will also work to offer shocks for many current bikes currently running alternative shocks. These shocks will have the required sizes and mounting types and some will require tuning by a service center to meet a rider’s needs.

SiD usually brings in the new manufacturing and chassis tech which then cascades across the range.

So I guess the ReBA is next.

Funny thing is S.I.D is an Acronym for Superlight Intergrated Design so now the SuperLight Integrated Design SuperLight is the superlight option .

I'l still take one though especiallynow that it has an Alloy crown and steerer. I gues in two years time they will re-introduce the carbon crown and steerer with graphene to make the SID SL SLC Ultimate
