SRAM crank it to 52 tooth with new Eagle groupsets

SRAM today announced a new line-up of Eagle Expansion GX, X01, and XX1 groupsets featuring an increased gear range of 520%.

The notable mechanical changes are to the cassette and derailleur. To achieve the increased range, SRAM has up-sized the largest cog size on their Eagle cassette to 52 tooth from 50 tooth while the derailleur cage architecture has been adapted to accommodate the larger cog.

The refined derailleurs are backwards compatible with the 50 tooth Eagle cassettes. Those already riding Eagle AXS will be happy to hear that the 52T Expansion cassettes are forward compatible with your existing rear derailleur.

There are also some style updates with some new colourways available. Eagle GX now also offers a carbon crankset.

There is also a new unified chain gap tool that replaces all other Eagle chain gap tools across both cassette sizes.

*rolls eyes........*

MyproDoll, Jun 11 2020 05:41

Am I reading this right - new GX derailleur backwards compatible to 10-50 cassette BUT old GX Eagle derailleur not compatible to new 10-52 cassette considering the "...derailleur cage architecture has been adapted to accommodate the larger cog".  That would be rude of them if it's the case...

Myth, Jun 11 2020 06:12

OMW...what the actual *insert expletive here*

Proper douche-bag move, thanks SRAM.

morneS555, Jun 11 2020 06:43

apple called...they want their rose-gold accessories back

DieselnDust, Jun 12 2020 12:05

+'s

Nice colour ways, especially the copper

Great B-gap tool, excellent in fact

Improved GX derailleur, espcially the cage is now the same as the X01 (XX1 is still carbon)

-'s

What the heck making the old derailleur not compatible with the 10-52?? I'm sure its a simple case of replacing the cage but they won't say it....not cricket SRAM, thats not cricket.

* That 42 to 52 jump.....no, just no. Could have made it 43-52 instead but why not re-engineer the ratios so that it becomes a different gearing solution?

really disappointed

Fortunately the new bits still work with the 10-50 so I'll be sticking to that till I need to replace the derailleur

nickc, Jun 12 2020 07:29

Yes - happy with my existing 10-50, will wait for it to need replacing then upgrade - will probably last forever now :)

stefmeister, Jun 12 2020 08:36

Dear Sram

**** off!

Schnavel, Jun 12 2020 10:09

Am I reading this right - new GX derailleur backwards compatible to 10-50 cassette BUT old GX Eagle derailleur not compatible to new 10-52 cassette considering the "...derailleur cage architecture has been adapted to accommodate the larger cog".  That would be rude of them if it's the case...

Shimano and SRAM are just one upping each other. Sram releases Eagle with a 50T, then Shimano releases a 51T, then Sram release a 52T.

From a design perspective, there will be a difference to the cage, which is why the old derailleur won't work (according to Sram). That being said, it will be interesting to see if that really is the case in real life - the old version may work perfectly.

At the end of the day, the 52T is just a bail out gear - they haven't changed the rest of the cassette ratios - the next cog is still a 42T.

Waynemol, Jun 12 2020 02:03

https://www.garbaruk...s/12-speed.html

here you can have 10/52 shimano or sram, and you can have 7 colours with matching cages and chainrings

and its been around for a while

Hairy, Jun 12 2020 02:37

hey, if going for a new drive train, then that GX groupo is nice

edit: did I miss the local pricing anywhere? overseas the groupo comes in the same price, unless you upgrade to the carbon crankset.

DieselnDust, Jun 12 2020 03:51

No change to pricing. For SA off course subject to exchange rate.

Larry Montana, Jun 13 2020 07:28

Meh.... another buying trap.

Christie, Jun 14 2020 07:43

Cassette costs around $215 or R3700, it is not far from double SLX.

O my gosh ! So glad i still have my front derailleur waiting anxiously to be reattached  to my ancient vintage frame of 2016 .My post Covid budget allows for a modest 11 speed cassette of say R1500 .Soon a 12 speed bling 1O x 52 will set you back R10000 .I have heard that front derailleurs are now becoming sought after upgrades

Cyclopedia, Jun 15 2020 10:33

I am still happy with my 1 X 11 groupset...

Oufy MTB (Roadie), Jun 16 2020 07:39

If you cant get up a steep climb in a 50,you won't get up with a 52, you will pop a wheelie. Lol

Me rida my bicycle, Jun 16 2020 04:45

It would have been impressive if they redesigned the cassette not just take one dinner plate of and replaced it with a platter plate. This is one place that Shimano has the edge both their 12spd cassettes have much better "steps" in gearing.

Breezer, Jun 19 2020 09:11

Now you can have a 38t in front!
