Bike Check: Alan Hatherly’s Olympic Giant Anthem

· By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 55 comments

Alan Hatherly will be representing South Africa in the Rio Olympic XCO on Sunday (17:30 SA time) aboard his Giant Anthem X. Alan races professionally for Kargo Pro Cycling Team with Giant South Africa as the team’s bike sponsor.

To celebrate Alan’s achievement, his Anthem X underwent some special treatment from Graham Kidson at Carbon Craft, coming up with a custom South African themed paint scheme.

Alan will be using a full Shimano XTR drivetrain to propel his bike with XTR Race brakes doing the stopping. He has elected to go with a single chainring setup using either a 32 or 34 tooth ring with a 11-40 cassette.

A RockShox SID World Cup fork absorbs the impacts on the front while a Fox Float shock does duty on the rear. The Fox Float has a remote lockout using a Shimano shifter to flip between settings.

Alan likes his handlebars low, using a negative 17 degree Ritchey stem to hold his Giant carbon handlebar while sitting on a Fizik M3 saddle and Giant Contact Composite seatpost.

The bike rolls on a Mavic Crossmax SLR wheelset wrapped in Continental Race King tyres. If the course is loose, Alan prefers to ride a X King on the front for added grip and should things turn wet he’ll reach for a Mud King.

Kekekeke. Looks far sweeter and it has a vertically mounted shock. So new age ouma won't know what she's looking at.

Apologies if I've been living in a cave and not keeping up to date with the local XCO scene, but who is Alan Hatherly and when did he arrive on the scene? What happened to the likes of Phil Buys, Max Knox and those okes?

Obviously it's a design that works well ... in any case, it's leg power and riding ability that counts most.

So an oke trains, races his ass off and gets to do what he loves. What we love. He does it so well that he gets to go to the Ofreakinglympics. As a token of their appreciation the sponsors and / or manufacturer goes to the effort to get him a custom paint job in his country's colors (or one that changes colors!)

Instead of us going

- Leka saffa

- holy ****, well done for going

- We are proud of you making it there

- make us proud

- lekker to see a youngster make it there lets wish him many years of great racing.

On the flip side Giant / Kargo all the other sponsors put themselves out there in order to support the sport of ours, help it grow, FIND THE NEXT OLYMPIAN with maybe one day a medal and then a top step to follow.

We rather bash, comment, cyber bully and be stupid about things. When did we as people become so feeble minded that we can't see the good in something and just wish everyone the best for achieving what they have achieved? What will you and I be doing this weekend when that guy is representing his country at the Ofreakinglympics?

Crit is fine, but if it's all you can get out then maybe listen to your Dad's advice and rather say nothing at all.

EDIT: Why not rather use this a message board for your support of him and our team? Something that can actually be sent to him and he'll know that **** everyone, Hubbers I've got the support of hubbers.

You are not off sides TBH, you just asked a question.

He is obviously an up and coming young guy and will not be as well known as the names that have been around for much longer.

Who are the currrent top 5 MTB XCO guys in the country as a point of interest?

He's a really, really talented rider. Better than those okes at the moment and has performed brilliantly in the local series, as Karma has pointed out. Deserves to be there, he does.

This being of particular importance...

"20-year old Hatherly will be competing in the Pro Elite Men’s Cross Country Mountain Bike race on Sunday, 21 August 2016. Hatherly is currently ranked 10th U23 Men in the world and achieved a 17th position finish (U23 Men) in the recent UCI MTB World Championships in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic."

To do that, you have to be FLIPPIN quick.

Mmmh, can't find the XCO Rankings anywhere, Marathon is a different list...

neither of the XCO boys are in the top 10 according to that.

Well it's impressive if he's only 20 yrs old and beating the likes of the other better known guys in SA. Let's hope he has a solid race at the Olympics, and maybe in future he'll be up there challenging for medals!

I'm watching this race to see the showdown between Gaze, Andreassen and Hatherley, should be good.

Its certainly going to be a good race, however I personally think Gaze will be mixing it up with the likes of Schurter, Absalon and Kulhavy at the front and Andreassen, Hatherly and Reid will be mixing it out for the top 15.

One thing is for sure. This is one of the most highly anticipated races of the past 4 years! Having Sagan there is also killer for the sport.
