Bikes of the Epic: Centurion Numinis XC

· By Bike Hub Features · 0 comments

Markus Kaufmann is riding the 2017 Absa Cape Epic aboard a Centurion Numinis. He and fellow Centurion Vaude team mate Jochen Kaess are currently sitting 7th in the men’s overall standings.

Although the German brand Centurion is not readily available in South Africa, they are no stranger to the Absa Cape Epic (or Bike Hub) having first taken part in the 2011 edition. Markus Kaufmann has completed five Cape Epics himself.

Markus’s Numinis is kitted with a full SRAM Eagle XX1 drivetrain featuring a 34 tooth chainring, and a SRM PowerMeter to measure the watts. A Sahmurai Sword has been adapted to fit inside the spindle. Stopping is performed by a set of Magura MT8 Carbon brakes and 160mm Magura rotors.

The Numinis is Centurion’s range leading carbon cross-country racer, designed around 100 mm of rear suspension. The pro team is sponsored by SR Suntour and they use the company’s UNAir shock and Axon fork which features a carbon monocoque crown. Instead of pivot bushing or bearings, the chain stays are designed to flex as the suspension compresses.

Weight weenie components include carbon a Procraft handlebar and seatpost, and a custom carbon fork cap. But there are some signs of practicality with a bundle of cable ties fixed to the seatstay and a GoPro mounted to the seatpost for content creation. Markus uses a Sigma Rox 11.0 GPS bike computer to monitor his vital race stats.

The Numinis is finished off with Tune Black Burner rims on Tune Kong (rear) and Princess Skyline (front) hubs. The tyres are from Schwalbe with a Rocket Ron on the rear. The front tyre looked very similar to the rear Rocket Ron but was unmarked and the mechanics at Centurion Vaude were unwilling to provide us with any information. A prototype perhaps.
