First Look Friday: Oakley Prizm Jawbreaker, FLR MTB Shoes, and Vee road tyres

· By Nick · 2 comments

First Look Friday is an introduction to the products that we are currently testing for review. This week we’re featuring the Oakley Prizm Road Jawbreaker sunglasses, FLR F-75 mountain bike shoes and Vee Tire Co’s Apache road tyres.

Oakley Prizm Road Jawbreaker

Oakley launched their new Prizm Jawbreaker sunglasses earlier this year to much fanfare. Designed with great input from Mark Cavendish, no detail was spared in their pursuit of the ultimate riding sunglasses.

There’s no way around the fact that on their own they look massive. Once on your face, with your helmet on your head, they do not look as big. It’s also at this time that you realize just how great the fit and field of view is. I have only done a handful of rides with these on, but can comfortably say these are some of the best riding glasses I’ve ever worn.

Included with the Prizm Jawbreaker is a Microbag with lense pouch, a Soft Vault Case and an extra nosepad.

Features:

  • PRIZM is a revolutionary lens technology that fine-tunes vision for specific sports and environments
  • Extended field of view in the upper peripheral region to optimize for cycling
  • Unobtanium earsocks and nosepads keep glasses in place, increasing grip despite perspiration
  • Switchlock interchangeable lens technology makes lens changing lenses fast and secure
  • Patented High Definition Optics® (HDO®) provides superior optical clarity and razor-sharp vision at every angle
  • PRIZM ROAD LENSE
  • Light Transmission: 20%
  • Light Conditions: Changing Conditions
  • Contrast: Increased
  • Base Lens Color: Indigo

FLR F-75 Mountain Bike Shoes

The FLR F-75 features a carbon plate around the cleat area to provide rigidity, while the front and back of the sole is a nylon material allowing for some flex and comfort. The lacing is made up of a REEL KNOB tightening system and a velco strap at the front of the should. As the shoes just came through the door, I haven’t had a chance to test them on the mountain. The F-75 model retails for R1,800.

  • Upper:Premium breathable microfiber with strong ventilated nylon mesh
  • Fastener: A-A14 REEL KNOB and Velcro for complete security
  • Welded protection in high-wear areas
  • Outsole: M350 with 100% carbon plate
  • Footbed: Performance Insole
  • Cleat: compatible with C-10 cleat series and all 2-bolt systems

FLR also offer a serious race shoe, the F-95X, with a full carbon sole at R2,900 as well as a full range below the F-75 price point to fit most wallets. The Bushmaster Pro caught our attention as a trail shoe with a Vibram sole designed for walking comfort and durability. It retails for R1,250. FLR aren’t just about the dirt, they also make road and triathlon shoes.

Vee Tire Co Apache Road Tyre

The Vee Tire Co. Apache tire sits at the top of their road tire range. Featuring proprietary single compound rubber the Apache is said to offer excellent grip with low rolling resistance.

Features:

The unique directional “VEE” cut design helps to increase traction while turning and allows for moisture release on wet days to prevent aquaplaning. They are available in standard or with a “Synthesis Sidewall” that offers extra sidewall and puncture protection but adds a bit more weight over the super light standard tire.
