Adrenaline filled round 1 of the Eliminator Series in KwaZulu Natal

· By Press Office · 0 comments

After two action packed events in the Western Cape the Eliminator Series moved up to a warm East Coast with round one taking place at Giba Gorge MTB Park. Coupled with National BMX taking place only a few meters away from the course it was a adrenaline filled day with plenty for entertainment for the spectators.

Eliminator is a short course heat racing format of mountain biking whereby riders race four at a time across a track(roughly 800m) being tested on their speed, power and bike handling skills. The top two finishers advance to the next round whilst the bottom two finishers are eliminated from the event. Basically it is everything you need for a cross country or marathon race condensed into a minute and a half leg burning sprint.

The course at Giba Gorge MTB Park was very compact which allowed spectators to see 100% of the racing as riders laid down the watts and streaked across the course, not even a number of hairpin turns were slowing them down. Racing was tight with a number of close sprint finishers and overtaking action on every inch of the track.

Riders were sprinting their way through round by round in order to make it to the Finals in order to try get their hands on some of the awesome prizes supplied by our sponsors: Red Bull, Skullcandy, OGIO, Fox Racing, Race Pace Sportswear and Yesman Branding which also included some prize money for age groups that had over 10 competitiors.

Over and above the individual accolades each rider in the junior categories(u/10 – u/19) is contributing points towards their school for the grand prize of R10 000 in premium cycling kit for the school team from Race Pace Sportswear and bragging rights as the “fastest” school in KwaZulu Natal. Maritzburg College and Go Durban Cycle Academy have shown that they are serious contenders for the title not only with large numbers in their teams but many of the riders advancing to the finals to collect the bulk of the points on offer.

New to the series this year is the addition of the Open and 40+ age divisions with the Open riders showing some series speed and power as they blasted their way around the course. The “Experienced Men’s” class(they didn’t take a liking to the 40+ labeling) was banter filled with plenty of laughs but still some focused racing.

Round two for KwaZulu Natal will take place on Sunday 18 June 2017 at Sugar Rush Park in Ballito where we will also be crowning our Overall Champs for KwaZulu Natal.
