Amashova Road Safety Bicycle Park ready to roll

· By Press Office · 0 comments

The Amashova Road Safety Bicycle Park at the George Cato Primary School in KwaZulu-Natal is complete and ready for action. This is the second bicycle safety park that has been built along the route of the Amashova Durban Classic between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

With road safety a passion and of great importance to the Amashova race organisers, Right on the Night, they aim to nurture an ethic of road safety to all children who pass through the programme. Whether they are pedestrians, cyclists, or ultimately drivers on our roads, the road safety programme will benefit all.

In working closely with KZN Cycling, a cycling club will be started at the school where two teachers have been identified by the principal of the school, Mr. Magwaza. Right on the Night provided all of the equipment, as well as the funding for the two teachers, to attend the 7-day UCI Coaching Course that runs this week.

The infrastructure of the bicycle park at the George Cato Primary School was provided for by a number of donations from engineering and other private companies in KwaZulu-Natal, for which they are extremely thankful.

The official opening is scheduled to take place on 1 October 2015, which coincides with the start of Transport Month. The departments’ road safety workbook will be introduced at the opening function and the day’s activities will culminate in an organised bicycle ride through the streets of Cato Ridge after which the children will be awarded certificates.

The first bicycle safety park was built at the Ethembeni School for the Physically Disabled and Visually Impaired in 2007. The park consists of a specially designed and approved tar area with traffic signs and road markings where children can either walk or ride their bicycles on the track.

Annie Batchelder of Right on the Night Promotions, the organisers of the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic, said: “We are hoping that this will become an annual event and encourage the development of cycling as well as responsible road users in the future!

“We thank all our sponsors who assisted us in making this dream a reality. The principal of the George Cato Primary School, Mr. Magwaza, has prepared a beautiful storeroom for the bikes and helmets. Everything is ready to teach children the importance of road safety and the rules of the road. This project will go a long way to developing a group of children who will be responsible road users of the future!”
