PPA safe cycling campaign partners with Cape 2 Knysna Cycle Tour

· By Press Office · 0 comments

The Pedal Power Association has partnered with one of the more successful road cycle tours in South Africa, the Cape 2 Knysna Cycle Tour (28 June- 03 July) to create awareness that will keep cyclists safe on our roads. Participants of the Tour will ride in Stay Wider of the Rider cycling jerseys which sends out a very ‘visible’ but definite message – motorists give us space.

The PPA’s primary role is to protect and empower cyclists. Our new STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER campaign which launched in February this year ahead of the Cycle Tour wants to create maximum awareness amongst all road users honing in on motorists which will hopefully lead to safer roads for our cyclists. Join thousands of supporters and pledge your support for the safe cycling campaign by riding in a “Stay Wider of the Rider” jersey.

“Visibility is a key issue that contributes towards cycling accidents on our roads. The new “Stay Wider of the Rider” safe cycling jerseys are highly visible and include the simple “Stay Wider of the Rider” message,” explains Steve Hayward chairman of the Pedal Power Association. “Riders participating will be visible from far away.”

The Cape Town 2 Knysna Tour will reward you with the most exceptional landscape on route from Stellenbosch then onto Worcester, Montagu, Ladismith, Eight Bells, George to Knysna arriving on Friday just in time for participation in the Momentum Argus Knysna Oyster Festival MTB & Road Races. The tour kicks off on Sunday 28th June at the package price of R6 950 includes accommodation, full back up support, all meals as well, entry to Knysna MTB or Road events as well as Stay Wider of the Rider cycling jerseys to be worn on tour

The PPA launched the very successful ‘Cyclists Stay Alive at 1.5’ campaign back in 2011 which resulted in a 1 metre passing law which was promulgated in 2013 in the Western Cape. The PPA will continue to lobby for a 1.5 metre passing distance. The STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER campaign urges motorists to obey the law and pass cyclists at a safe distance of at least 1 metre or more.
