Marathon World Champs incentives for SA riders

· By Press Office · 41 comments

Cycling South Africa’s Mountain Bike Commission has offered a great incentive to all South African mountain bikers who are competing in the 2015 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships in Selva Val Gardena in the Dolomites, Italy, on 27 June.

The Marathon discipline allows for riders who did not qualify through the selection process, to represent their nation by qualifying through the UCI Marathon World Series. Riders are required to compete in their Federation Kit.

The incentive is applicable to all the South African men or women participants in the Elite race, and is as follows:

  • R15 000 for a top five result
  • R10 000 for sixth to 15th place result
  • R5 000 for 16th to 25th place result

Those riders who qualified through the UCI Marathon World Series that intend to participate in the Marathon World Champs are required to send their information to Dellah Paul dellah@cyclingsa.com so that the entry can be processed timeously.

In the Elite race..... ummm i dont think i qualify for that one.

Nice way for them to try get people like the top pro's of SA to compete and not pay the full price for them!!! (If i read correctly, they are only sponsoring Max Knox to go) Just the flight is more costly than the top award.

I'm sure the riders' sponsors are willing to pay way more for that results if they compete in their sponsored jerseys.

breaking news: In celebration of the first 'African team' at the TdF, CSA is to offer R15000 to any South African that finishes on the overall podium.

to be frank I would rather they send double the number of South African Representatives than carrot dangling like this

Or a 3 night stay in Nkandla.

Jokes aside, this is great, and it is the direction where things need to be going. When I was a laaitie in High School, there was nothing like this. Now the school kids can see that this whole bicycle malarkey is not bad, and they can dream about a career in cycling with way better prospects than I had.

This type of thinking is what we need to keep the hope alive, and it WILL have an impact on the next generation.

At the  95 Rugby World Cup the SA guys were playing for peanuts. 20 years later and it is a viable career.

In 20 years if a Saffa wins a worlds marathon champ, remember what PhilipV wrote here.

PS: Don't forget Greg Minnaar's achievements.

Nice one Lakata

He obviously missed out on the memo to not spoil Christoph's farewell party. ................

Just kidding, it's a bike race and the best on the day won. Congrats to him for it. Susi did well to get second and does end his career on a high note.
