Escape to Greyton for a Long Weekend on the Trails

· By Press Office · 0 comments

The Greyt Escape is the perfect reason to spend a long weekend in the picturesque village of Greyton this winter. Taking place from the 16th to the 18th of June, over the Youth Day public holiday and subsequent weekend, the Greyt Escape is far more than just a mountain bike stage race. It is an experience to look forward to, and one you will look back on fondly for years to come, for the entire family.

The cornerstone of the Greyt Escape weekend is the three day stage race, which is supplemented by the Greyt Ride and the Greyt Run. The stage race boasts routes of 59, 60 and 41 kilometres in length across the three days and the altitude gained daily is a manageable 1 150, 1 145 and 850 meters respectively. The Greyt Run and the Greyt Ride meanwhile take place on Saturday the 17th of June and feature 5, 12 and 21 kilometre distances for trail runners and a 40 kilometre distance for mountain bikers. The long distance trail run is limited to 100 entries though, as it passes through a sensitive ecological site to which the daily entry limit is just 100 people.

As any visitor to Greyton knows the spectacular Sonderend Mountains make the area the ideal mountain biking and trail running playground. The mountain biking routes include famous local trails like the UFO climb, the Middelplaas singletrack, the Riverside Speedway, Koggelmander Spoor, Blue Hippo Climb, the Nguni trail, the Maermanskloof Climb, the Bakenskop Cobra switchback climb, Davey’s Sprocket, Rocky Horror, and your last treat of the weekend Die Luislang.

To ensure you can make the most of the off-the-bike attractions on offer in Greyton the riding with start at a leisurely half past eight daily. The Old Potters Inn, on the Main Road of Greyton, is the venue for much of the weekend’s action – including the stage starts, for all but the mountain biking on Saturday which starts and finishes at The Oaks Estate outside town. You will receive a friendly welcome, and a hearty lunch after Stage 2 at The Oaks Estate, one of the most popular event venues in the area. Remember to book meals if you haven’t.

Packages for the weekend provide the options of including lunches and dinners, or not, and are available for team or solo riders. There’s also the option to purchase additional meal packages for the non-riding members of your family, so they too can enjoy the scrumptious catering.

Accommodation in Greyton is limited so Greyt Escape you are encouraged to book into a bed and breakfast or self-catering cottage when you enter the event. All accommodation bookings can be made via the Greyton Tourism website, www.greytontourism.com, where you can also find out all about the area. While there are currently still accommodation options available, please be warned Greyton is nearly as famed for being fully booked over adventure weekends as it is for the excellence of said weekends.
