Neethling nails Continental Champs downhill title in close encounter

· By Press Office · 34 comments

Western Cape local Andrew Neethling, a professional racer for the international Giant Factory Racing Team, claimed the 2014 African Continental Championship downhill title at Contermanskloof on Sunday 26 January.

Neethling’s victory was not entirely a walk-in-the-park as he secured the winning time of 2 minutes 6.94 seconds in a close encounter with just under 4 seconds separating the top 5 finishers.

2013 African Continental Champs silver medallist Tiaan Odendaal repeated his finish by claiming silver yet again, a mere 0.42 seconds off the pace, with fellow local rider Johann Potgieter taking the bronze medal a further 1.30 seconds back.

Tim Bentley and Stefan Garlicki finished in 4th and 5th places respectively, clocking 02:09.25 and 02:10.69 respectively in their final runs.

“My off-season has been good, but good means hard,” said Neethling after his victory. “I’ve been working hard at my fitness and my coach has not been easy on me. It felt good to race again after a long training block.”

Neethling’s next big event with his pro team is early April, for the start of the UCI World Cup season in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

Speaking about the race at Contermanskloof, Neethling described just how close it was: “The top section of the track makes the racing very close, but it is the second half of the track where it gets really exciting. The trail becomes a lot looser and dustier, with holes developing, and the racing lines changing as the day progresses.

“My seeding run was consistent – it was what I wanted. Tiaan’s result was not a surprise, but he was a lot closer than I expected – he is a great rider. I knew Johann (Potgieter) and Stefan (Garlicki) would be fast on the local course and that they would be out for blood as usual.”

The Elite women’s title was claimed by Hayley-Ann Adamson in a time of 4 minutes 38.79 seconds.

Andrew Martin posted the fastest time in the Junior Men category to secure his victory in 02:18.60. Martin was followed by Jonathan Philogene (02:22.29) and Gregg Brown (02:28.79).

Claudio, any chance we're gonna start getting some thehubsa video coverage of these kinds of events? I mean even the bloody aussies have their races covered  It would be great for the sport locally and for thehub to create some of it's own content.

We'd love to and if a partner for video production comes along somewhere down the line, then yes! In terms of our own content, we are working hard to increase it. Especially this year we will be producing more reviews, cool features, race reports from person perspectives, bike builds, and more. It's going to be cool, so keep an eye out in the news section for now for more content.

There has to be a few hubbers who work for a company that would be interested. Even just from an exposure point of view-iirc thehub has some impressive visit numbers.

No Rika Olivier?

I see Rika actually won the Elite women in just over 3 mins. Claudio, your results seem to be wrong in that category?

The results were directly from Cycling SA with the full sheet here: http://www.cyclingsa.com/App_Resources/Uploads/FILE00003127.pdf

Perhaps they've been updated / corrected since the press release. Where did you see Rika's result?

(I saw her flying down during practice runs and wondered why she wasn't on the results list)

No Rika did not race EW as she wants points for masters world champs.

so there was only one womans elite competitor for the entire continent?

I need to go read all the comments from Wyatts thread about the state/future of womens downhill because this is most concerning?

Yes guys my name doesn't deserve to stand there but I even failed to get out of that one sadly due to no other elite woman coming to ride... it is quite embarrasing!

Yes only one EW rider. Rika chose to ride in her class so she can go to masters world champs.

Simone is not form the African continent so she cant compete in the EW category.

If the other girls [Nadia, Stacey, Kath (she would maybe have done sub vets)] were given some financial support I am sure they would have been there. A weekend like this isn't cheap!

at least you made the effort to show up - what the hell is going on ladies? there was a lot of angst in that thread I mentioned..so when the opportunity for a continental title comes up surely you make an effort?

sure I get that Hayley..but this is a continental champs.. a combined roadtrip or whatever, and I am sure with some appeal people would have offered accommodation.

An effort is different than having to take off work responsibilities and putting money into a weekend if you don't get anything in return. (I'm not talking about myself here, cause my work is quite generous in that regard)

I would love to get more ladies involved and I scratch my head daily thinking of how to do so. We need some sorts of sponsors. And I'm not talking about people that would pay these ladies, just something that will get the top ladies (not me) and their bikes to the races.

It is a sad story!

You pitched up, you rode, you finished first. Nothing you can do if there was nobody to race against you, you did your bit. Congrats, champ!

First 3 should have been riding elite men but you had to have a south african jersey to ride elite categories (UCI rules for international championship races). So they rode sport instead.
