A beautiful morning broke in Malmesbury with blue skies and no wind, but by lunch time the 160km riders struggled against a head wind towards the finish. The 50Miler started at 9am in Riebeeck-Kasteel where it was cloudy and misty from the start, which turned into light rain a few hours later.

The two top riders of the 100Miler were both on gravel bikes with Jaco Davel coming in first in a time of 5 hours 59 min and Bennie Viljoen to follow just over three minutes later.

Yolande de Villiers won the ladies for the second consecutive year in a time of 6 hours 21 min to finish fifth overall.

The event has become popular for gravel bikes and even a road bike was spotted! Some roads are corrugated, which could become a hard day in the saddle. There is also an E-bike category in both distances, but most riders are still on full suspension 29er mountain bikes.

In the 50Miler event, Freddie Visser took the win with Jan-Hendrik Theron and Coenraad Maas to follow. Nienke Mostert was the overall ladies winner. Full results and times can be viewed on www.trailtag.co.za.

Local Malmesbury cycling club uses the event as a fundraiser by providing staff for marshals and waterpoints. The event was held a month earlier in 2019 and the farm life is beautiful this time of year with lambing season in the Swartland.
