Team Announcement for XCO World Champs – Nové Mēsto (CZE)

· By Press Office · 69 comments

Cycling South Africa’s Mountain Bike Commission has great pleasure in announcing that the following riders have been selected to represent South Africa at the 2016 UCI Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships at Nové Mēsto na Moravē, Czech Republic, from 29 June to 3 July.

The following riders have been selected according to the 2016 CSA-MTB Selection Criteria:

Elite Men:

Philip Buys
James Reid
Sipho Madolo

Under-23 Men:

Alan Hatherly

Junior Men:

Henry Liebenberg

Junior Women:

Danielle Strydom

Please note that this selection ONLY refers to the 2016 UCI MTB XCO World Championships. The team for the Downhill World Championships will be announced later, as the XCO World Champs takes place two months earlier than the DHI World Champs this year.

As required in our MTB Selection Policy, very strict and objective selection criteria were applied, with data assessed from at least seven designated selection races, as well as taking international performances into account, where applicable. This year, unfortunately no Elite or Under-23 Women met the performance criteria.

Congratulations on your selection and we wish you every success.

Yes it would be really interesting to know the selection criteria. I mean if neither Mariske or Cherie can be selected for the World Champs then one could be forgiven for thinking that any Olympic dreams they had for Rio is completely done for. And that plain sucks.

couldnt agree more, how can you send someone who is ranked 210th and not send our best female. disappointing when government gets involved in sport.

We cannot foster excellence by rewarding mediocrity - no matter what the motive.

Simple as that.

Seems that this is the main part of the criteria:

7.0 Performance Criteria

7.01 It is again emphasized that team selection is not automatic on meeting the performance criteria
7.02 The ability of riders to meet the targets in competition will also be assessed
7.03 To be eligible for team selection, riders would need to meet the minimum criteria detailed below
7.04 If no riders in any specific category or group meet the criteria, then no riders will be selected for that
Category
7.05 PDI riders will still have to meet the selection criteria, but the percentage targets below will be
increased by 10%

7.06 Cross Country – XCO:
7.06.001 XCO – Men
Riders must have average lap times of no more than the percentages [%] shown below for the
fastest Elite Male athlete in SA in at least 3 events where the top SA Elite Athlete is
competing, or the winning Elite male as indicated above:

7.06.002 Elite Men

Plus, you need 15% PD representation. So Sipho is our 1/6.

Problem comes in that the ladies do actually qualify and communication had gone out on it earlier. Now CSA are saying cause the ladies never matched the % required in 2 events. However, those 2 events were PMB festival which was measured on weather and the other was African champs in leotho but there according to male Elite times they did match it but additional was added which Im not getting into.

There is more coming from this and wont be surprised if the Ladies go to Worlds where they rightfully deserve to go.

The girls already can't goto Rio and now this! Are CSA trying to squash woman's XCO on purpose?

They didn't score enough UCI points

If you watched the women's XCO on Sunday you would've seen why the German ladies were so happy with their placements . It was the last chance to score points and they did enough to send I think 3 ladies to RIO.

SA ladies were very lax trying to score the points .. they should have been riding more UCI races (perhaps smaller races) to score points, qualifying criteria was set long ago.

Its all about "representation" they dont give a f#k about performance, as long as we have a 210th placed PD then who cares, this will be the cause of ALL of our sport going down the drain

The girls can't goto Rio because:

a)  South Africa won the continental quotas in men's and women's mountain bike, but decided not to accept them. South African sports confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and Cycling South Africa (CSA) made an agreement on the Rio 2016 Olympics qualification criteria that the Continental Qualification route will not be considered.

b)This is for Woman specifically: Countries ranked from 1 to 8 can take 2 athletes to Rio. teams ranked from 9 to 17 can take 1 athlete to Rio. South Africa is currently ranked 21st giving us 0 Rio spots.

So because we forfeited our continental quotas no woman athletes will be going to Rio for XCO.

Mariske was injured much of 2015 but is still ranked 60th (530) regardless of the off time, Cherie did her best to score points and is currently 30th (812). ZA ladies have a total of 3155 points so between the two of them they have earned moving towards half all the points.

There isn't much more they could have done besides Mariske not being injured which isn't something that could be avoided. Other woman really needed to come to the party with points but its obviously not a priority for them to see a ZA lady at the Olympics.

Thx for the clarification .. other ladies need to start pulling their weight too

Hopefully there are more committed youngsters coming up through the ranks.

We have said it before and I say it again.. if you want to make you have to take matters into your own hands.. you cannot wait for sponsors to send you to Europe you will have to decide yes I want to give it a go and make your own way to Europe work jobs to pay your way and do races on weekends... just like Burry did in the beginning of his career too many riders are waiting for things to happen to them and not making things happen for themselves.

Superlax???

Really?

Race more UCI races??

Do you have any idea the races that were done in order to go to Rio? They raced all the specific races that were "UCI" as you say. They raced plenty. They couldn't of actually done any more.

See above. . It's not just up to 2 riders to score the necessary points.. the more riders you have racing the more points you could score.

End of the day.. the youngster are not being managed well (i don't think) they don't receive much guidance from our governing body either. . Until our governing body decide "let's help ensure we qualify for the Olympics" not much will change.

There is a huge

Sadly this is the state of affairs.

I suppose we can also look at Candice Neethling - she went to London 2012 probably with a way lower UCI ranking, was that not for future development? Now she's not even mentioned in the Rio picture.

In broad terms of Olympics, I think it's an arms race that sees very little point to countries like ours. We should not be measuring ourselves on medals. That is just unattainable as we only really get the few freak performances that have f@#$ all to do with SASCOC's help. All countries outside of the top 10 should really be measured on finals made (or medals per GDP/capita etc etc).
