Theo Erlangsen overcame tough conditions and charging competitors to win Round Three of the SRAM Gravity Enduro Series presented by YT Industries held at Contermanskloof on Sunday 14 August 2016. Erlangsen finished ahead of Robert Starke and Gert Heyns over the four-stage event in a combined time of 00:07:19,754.

Enduro’s are always fun,” Erlangsen, who comes from a Downhill racing background commented afterward. “Winning feels pretty good too,” he said.

In contrast to the perfect racing conditions during Round Two in Jonkershoek two weeks prior (won by Gert Heyns), cold, wet and windy conditions tested all comers at Contermanskloof. “The first two stages were super tricky,” Erlangsen – who was piloting an aluminium YT Capra – explains. “Just super slick because of all the rain before and on the day.”

“The third stage (1.35km -9% 106m) wasn’t too bad (in terms of grip), as the berms had been nicely build-up,” he said, before adding that the head wind on that stage and the fourth and final stage made things pretty tough.

“Stage four (2.4km -12% 291m) was by far the best of the day,” Erlangsen said. “The head wind at the top was quite hectic, but otherwise the track was really really sick the whole way down.”

According to Erlangsen the best part about racing Enduro – the true spirit of it – is that it brings together riders from various disciplines and allows them to race on a ‘level playing field’ of sorts.

“Having riders form different spectrums compete against each other keeps every location interesting. For technical tracks I’ll have an advantage but then for pedalling tracks the cross-country and marathon guys have an advantage,” he said.

“On Sunday I knew that I would need to build up time in the technical sections because in the pedal sections I could just see Gert blitzing. Overall that is definitely pushing me to become a fitter rider.
