Cape Town Cycle Tour 2017 cancelled

· By Press Office · 242 comments

Based on consultation with all the emergency services, the Joint Operations Centre of the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2017 regrets to announce that they have had to take the unprecedented step of cancelling this year’s 40th Cycle Tour. This is due to winds in excess of 100km/hour on parts of the route, and the need to urgently clear the roads for emergency vehicles to attend to fires.

All riders who have started on the route will be stopped at the end of the M3. They will be contained there and traffic authorities will escort them back on the M3.

David Bellairs of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust will be holding a press conference at the Southern Sun Cullinan hotel at 10:00.

Update: Full Statement

The full statement regarding reasons for the cancellation of the 40th Cape Town Cycle Tour can be read here.

Will just sit here with my popcorn, waiting for the inevitable comment:

"the wind was predicted days ago, why did they not just move the race to another date".....

It's quite disappointing showing up for the race and then it's cancelled, but the safely of all is more important.

Hopefully next year's race will be worth the wait.

See you then.

Disappointing ,but nessasary. I remember 2009 wind pumping MTN tent, start finish banners etc all blew away and the race still went ahead.

I finished in one piece ,but going down chappies was no joke...

Light bike=kite :-)

PS:I would have preferred the race cancelled that year

Where on the route was it that bad? I got to end of blue route where they physically stopped us from going further. Yes it was hectic at the start but after that it was ridable. There are going to be a lot of angry people, me included.

same arguments were made when they canceled the swim leg at half ironman; a few people would have made it if they allowed it; even some of the pros came out shaken up.

Problem is you have 40 000 odd ppl, if a single % of them get into serious crashes then its carnage to try and remedy. One 100km gust of wind coming a around a corner at 60km a hour when you have 20 sets of wheels around you... instant bone yard.

Screaming southerly on this side. Was my intent to going rowing this morning but with this wind I will keep myself busy in the workshop for the rest of the day. this wind is a heart attack waiting to happen.

That's after we received this earlier in the morning:

Urgent route update! The #cycletour2017 will be diverted over Glencairn express way due to protest action on the route.Distance now approx 78km

I'm very much interested to hear more about the protest action and why it was decided to target the Cycle Tour. Protests don't magically spring up at 6am on a Sunday morning, there must be a story.

I feel for the people that travelled far and spend much money to attend this race. I think the wind excuse is BS, and that the real reason lies elsewhere. I believe the wind was worse in 2009, yet many people finished that race.

Wind is part of cycling. HTFU

Entering the race you agree to indemnify the race organisers against a host of stuff.

And what if we get hold hostage again next year by protesters on a hot sunny day.

Blaming the wind is an easy excuse to avoid the political stuff

Im sure the Epic will cancel the prologue because its to windy on Dorsberg

Im now lekker die moer in

They could have moved the start on the other side of the tunnel under the civic centre. Cape Town is know for wind. Period.

Was there also a massive fire close to the route in windy 2009??

Sure you are all lekker p1553d off because it is cancelled, but what do you tell all those affected by the fires that "Sorry, we couldn't bring the firetruck/ambulance to you because we closed the road so that other people could enjoy themselves riding their bikes..."?

Have some perspective...

I think its a good call for a host of reasons. Noone can stay on a bike in a 100kmph squall ... not me, not you, not froome or sagan.

Also i wouldn't feel right riding past a community of the poorest people in the country 100's of whom have lost everything they have. Rather go buy some baby formula and drop it off at the spar.

It's just a bike ride. There's another one next week and another argus next year.

I do feel for all the visitors, particularly those from overseas.

Agree

It is understated

There's lots going on in Cape Town now with the angry weather gods and many community members distressed about the fire damage yesterday

This is windy season in Cape Town, anybody who has ever been in CT during windy season will know what a hurricane feels like.

Why is the CTCT held this time of the year. Although never cancelled, this is not the first time the event has been spoiled because of high winds.

The protests and the fires are contributing. 2009 may have been worse but maybe the organisers learned from it and said 'we're not going through that again' - realised how dangerous the whole situation was & difficult to manage.
