The Pedal Power Association is proud to welcome onboard Craft SA as the new headline sponsor of its iconic “One Tonner” road race over 163 km.

The Craft One Tonner, which takes place on Sunday 18 October, is unique in that it is one of only two events on the PPA calendar longer than 120 km, which makes it not only a challenge to complete for the average rider, but also a great training ride for cyclists participating in PPA’s Coronation Double Century roughly a month later.

“We at Craft SA enjoy hard work and we are proud to partner with the PPA One Tonner, one of the biggest road races in the Western Cape. This year’s event marks the first year of a larger three-year sponsorship deal with PPA,” said Du Toit Marais, MD Supernova Brands.

Event details

The 2015 Craft One Tonner will be an Official Premier Seeding Series event for the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The event starts and finishes in Stellenbosch, with the tough 5 km climb over Helshoogte posing a challenge to cold muscles barely 1 km after the start. Thereafter the route follows the undulating roads past Wellington towards Riebeeck Kasteel, with the second climb of the day over the Botmaskloof Pass looming shortly after the 80 km mark. Depending on the prevailing wind on the day, the return via Malmesbury to Stellenbosch along the relatively flat R304 can be a pleasure – or really hard work.

For the past six years, the One Tonner has been known as the Pedal Power Association’s flagship road event. Since 2013, the event has consistently attracted between 1700 and 2000 participants. In 2014, female participation increased to 13.5%. Interestingly, last year 37% of participants last year fell into the ‘veterans’ category (40-49 years), followed by sub-vets (31%) and masters (15%).

Entries close at 14h00 on Friday 9 October or as soon as 2000 entries have been reached, whichever comes first.
