Exciting Changes for Garden Route’s Favourite Stage Race

· By Press Office · 0 comments

The three-day Dr Evil Classic is an annual favorite on the MTB Calendar. In keeping with the continued evolution and improvement of the event, organizers Zandile Meneses and Leon ‘Dr Evil’ Evans are set to introduce a few exciting innovations in 2020. Perhaps the most important change being the exciting partnership with their new title sponsor, CCPP Group, who have just signed a 3 year contract with the event.

CCPP Group is headed up by Clint Cawood who is a passionate rider and has ridden both events a few times. Cawood’s business grew out of humble beginnings in the Garden Route and it has gone from strength to strength and he recognizes the synergy here with the Dr Evil Classic’s progress since inception in 2012.

According to Cawood, he is very excited to have his company involved:

I believe we will be creating some new experiences and fun additions to an already cool event. I think it’s a heritage type ride, something every mountain biker has to do at least once.

Not only has CCPP come on board as title sponsor of Dr Evil Classic, but also for the Lion’s Karoo to Coast Mountain Bike Challenge, an event with whom the Dr Evil Classic has always had a close association.

The combination challenge of Dr Evil and K2C is one I’ve grown to really enjoy, They’re always the two events to be marked down on my calendar first every year!

Race co- owner – Zandile Meneses, added that she is delighted with the new partnership and in order to celebrate the event is now offering riders R350 off on MANUAL entries until the 31st March – inbox Zandile@drevilclassic.com for the manual form.

The fact that Clint is a cyclist and loves the sport and has ridden the events, makes the potential for this new partnership much more interesting.

That block-out on the calendar in 2020 is from Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th of September for the CCPP Group Dr Evil Classic, with the extremely popular CCPP Group Lion’s Karoo to Coast taking place on the 20th.

In addition, Science to Sport and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa have come on board as a training-support partner. Dr Mike Posthumus will be supplying regular training tips and interesting articles on the event website from the end of March.

Spectacular Trails

The additions are all with the aim of the improvement of the rider experience and at the core of this remains the best mountain-biking trails the Eden District has to offer. All in easily-manageable stages:

  • Stage 1 (hosted by Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve) is the longest and arguably the most challenging of the race at 71 kilometres in length with 1 400 meters of climbing. It features spectacular trails, great views of the Outeniqua Mountains and epic game viewing.
  • Stage 2 starts and finishes on the manicured fields of the Kurland Hotel and Polo Estate. The second day’s route is a manageable 45 kilometres in length with some 980 meters of climbing. Ever more new sections of singletrack are being added to this day and that is what riders can look forward to.
  • The final stage of the race is hosted by the Cairnbrogie Farm and boasts the area’s best single tracks. Coastal and forest trails make up the bulk of the 51-kilometre route which takes in 800 meters of climbing though the Harkerville Forest section of the Garden Route National Park.
