Transition Patrol Carbon custom build

· By Press Office · 12 comments

The importers of Transition bikes Dirt Merchant Bicycle Co. and Cape Town based cSixx components, recently built a custom version of the all-mountain bike that took top honours for Pinkbike.com’s Mountain Bike of the Year in 2016; the Transition carbon Patrol.

The Patrol is a 155mm travel all-mountain bike; it follows the low, long and slack geometry trend that more and more manufacturers are adopting. The Patrol Carbon is built to fit a 160mm fork and 650b wheels and is the successor of the 2014 aluminium version which featured as Dirt Magazine’s top 100 products of 2016.

Transition explains what makes the lighter weight carbon version special:

The carbon front triangle, seatstays and chainstays provide a crisp and responsive ride with excellent trail feel. Featuring all the same geometry and GiddyUp suspension as the aluminium Patrol, the Patrol Carbon is even more capable up and down mountains. The fully guided internal cable routing for rear brake and derailleur are easy to use and rattle free. The collet main pivot keeps the rear end stiff and the threaded bottom bracket is a mechanics dream. With around a 600 gram weight savings over the aluminium Patrol the Patrol Carbon climbs like an E-bike, and descends like a downhill bike.

Mike Levy of Pinkbike.com further explains why the Patrol Carbon is their 2016 Mountain Bike of the Year.

It is not because of its descending prowess, which it has in spades, but because Transition has created an immensely versatile machine that manages to excel everywhere but without taking away from its capabilities on rowdy terrain. Simply put, this is a bike that everyone can have fun on, no matter what type of trails they like to ride. The Carbon Patrol is the bulldog that can win an agility contest; the Motorhead fan who secretly knows how to dance the salsa.

It came naturally to fit this bike with a cSixx wheelset, handlebar, chain guide, and a beautiful Fox Float 36.

The build features the following:

The 2017 Patrol Carbon comes standard with a RockShox Super Deluxe RC3 shock. The bike featured in this article, however, is a 2016 frame with the RockShox Monarch Plus Debonair shock. The custom build, Patrol #2 spec, and Patrol #3 spec are available from Dirt Merchant Bicycle Co.

The cSixx rims:

We chose cSixx components as it was designed and developed in the shadow of Table Mountain. The team has poured heart and soul into the cSixx END 9Series rim over the past 5 years. From the outset, their explicit goal has been to build a rim that made them faster and more confident. With thousands of hours of real-world testing, cSixx believe that the 430g END 9Series rim is the optimal convergence of durability, weight, and vertical compliance, a perfect fit for an award-winning bike like the Patrol.

The cSixx END 9Series rims are available individually or as a wheelset, with a wide range of hub options.

cSixx carbon handlebars have improved exponentially since the introduction of their in-house Drop Test rig. It allows cSixx to perform critical testing of the strength, flex, dampening, durability etc … not only of their product but also that of the competition.

This allows them to analyse their prototypes instantly and refine the product quickly and effectively.

cSixx 9series EnduroChainguide

The 9series Enduro guide uses a super light and stiff handmade carbon backplate and top guide cage. A unique, replaceable skid plate, CNC machined from high impact nylon, will protect your chainring and chain from rock strikes. Perfect for trail bombing or elite racing. Never let a dropped chain or stray rock ruin your run again!

ccs-62657-0-68527500-1488875398.jpg

Fitment is super easy with their chainring indicator moulded into all cSixx guides. Simply loosen the cage, shift it down until your chain is covering the indicator and tighten.

All of their chain guides use the same tech so that they are interchangeable throughout the range. Even their hardware is compatible with bits you would have in your tool box or even on your bike. Between standard M5 and chainring bolts, their hardware is the most common.

True, but compared to plenty of other brands eg Santa Cruz and Spaz, its actually in the ballpark when you look at all that carbon and quality suspension.

Somehow, saying "I'd really like to try a Tranny Patrol" doesn't sound right...
