Stolen: Surly Karate Monkey 2015

About the bicycle

Type:

Mountain Bike

Brand:

Surly

Model:

Karate Monkey

Year:

2015

Colour:

lime green

More about the bike:

I built up this bicycle: it is brand new, except the frame and handlebars. The components (hydraulic disc brakes, 2 × 10 gears and crankset) are Shimano XLS. The wheels are DT Swiss E512 29" rims and 350 hubs, which will be rare in this country, especially since I spoked them with heavy-duty (2.0 mm) silver-coloured spokes"”most wheels are built with black. The frame is lime-green steel made by Surly in the USA and was second hand, but in good nick; there is a gusset on the frame between the saddle-post mount. It is very distinctive and may be one of a handful in the country. The front suspension are RockShox Reba and the saddle is by Ergon.

More about the incident:

The time indicated is a guess, but we think between 19:00 and 22:00 on 20 May 2020. Access to where the bicycle was stolen is not trivial, so the perpetrators would have been familiar with the area, or invested considerable time in surveillance. They are likely from the area, and if they have any sense, will have sold the bicycle already. Anyone buying a bicycle like this knowing it stolen would probably strip it and sell the components or build something else. Apparently some planks were also stolen: they may have been some use in getting away over or through barbed wire fences (they cut the fence and made a human-size hole). Whether they specifically aimed to steal this bicycle (there are three others to choose from) is unknown. It was probably the easiest, and closest to the cover of a large tree in case they were disturbed.
