Please share your dirt jumps in the Cape Town CBD and surrounding areas

Hello community,

Would anyone care to share any dirt jump locations around Cape Town? I am slowly but surely getting into BMX dirt jumping but there seems to be distinct lack of jumps in and around the greater Cape Town area. The only noticeable jumps I have come across are the UCT jumps, and while they look beautiful, they are a little daunting for the seasoned beginner like me. The chicken run and table tops look like a good place to start.

Are there any not-so-huge jumps in the surrounding areas? We're responsible, and will always repair any lip / jump damage that my arise.

Regards,

Simon

Simon - just from my side, where are the UCT jumps situated? I know they're near UCT, but other than that...

hi, the uct jump track is situated just below upper campus on the north side of Woolsack drive. it is on private university property and the sports administration office has a permit system in place. I'm not too sure on the process but you can inquire at the sports centre admin office on upper campus.

hope that helps.

As already mentioned, they are just off woolsack drive to the left. Easiest way to get there:

  •
  • Take M3 as if going to UCT from Hospital Bend
  • As you approach Mostards Mill keep left but DONT turn off there.
  • Take Woolsack drive to the left
  • Go all way down to Main Road
  • Swing a left
  • Take second street left (Chapel Street)
  • Drive ALL THE WAY to the top, past the sports fields.
  • You wont miss them, they are a gift honestly!

As for permits, I have not yet ridden there - only drooled over them - but once turned off from Woolsack, take a RIGHT at first little 4 way intersection, head on up to UCT's Upper Campus, and you can obtain a permit from the Sports Admin Building. As far as I know, it's about R25 a day. Looks like great fun.

I have been alone once to look at them, but I do not feel comfortable as I've seem some funnies hanging around. There are some rules and regulations on a UCT cycling board / notice, obey them.

Keen to ride with anyone who can show us the ropes?? Anyone?

Regards,

Simon

Here's a Google Map of the jumps: http://maps.google.co.za/maps?q=woolsack+drive,+cape+town&hl=en&ll=-33.954396,18.46617&spn=0.001902,0.004128&sll=-28.45,24.7&sspn=32.715242,67.631836&t=h&z=19

Image does not do them justice, they are honestly VERY well built and maintained. Scary, some big jumps but also great chicken runs to practice the flow and control on.

The U C T track is a lot of fun. Havent ridden there since last year though. Take your fitness with cos after a few decent runs you are knackered!

As for other jumps, there are trails in constantia that are massive as well as the legendary cammos in lakeside. I first rode cammos in 1995 and they are still there! Huge though. Further south there are smaller trails in Sun Valley . As well as a secret dh / jump track on black hill that i might share one day when it is finished!

If you don't mind me asking, where about in Constantia are they? And is there a bit of territory marking at all? Always keen to explore new areas, but sometimes the locals are not as welcoming.

The constantia jumps are locked with chains on the jumps. Dont know the locals at all . As for directions, its tricky to explain. I found then by chance. There are secret jumps all over cape town. Just look for places that seem likely and poke around. Or go to g spot . Its rad!

Great, will snoop around and see what I can find. Found some really fun jumps in stellenbosch, a block or two away from Medi Clinic Hospital. Not sure who they belong to, but have never seen them being ridden at all. There are about 4 or so that are in pretty good condition, the rest are overgrown with grass, so my guess is that they either belong to some kiddies who've abandoned them, or they were built and used by students who've moved on. Either way, they're fun.

@SteveCT - thanks for the map, may pull around there one day just to check it out and at least see if we can get to have a word with the locals, see their moves, and get a better feel for the type of jumps they are. Do they seem pretty big?

If you looking for serious badass jumps go to Gum Trial...close to Magic Forest, in Durbanville....some big ones there

Onestuckpixel,

You won't find many jumps that are easier than UCT ones. I helped build them in the early days and they were perfect for begginners (small and more tabletops). Unfortunately, as we progressed and better riders started building there, the track got pretty technical and a bit harder. The only real options IMO for a begginer jumper are Delvera farm in Stellenbosch and the G Spot in Stellenbosch. The ones in Constantia are a definet no-no for a begginner (let alone the crowd that hangs there!)

Just a friendly word of warning, the Constantia trails are VERY OUT OF BOUNDS unless you know the locals VERY VERY WELL. If they find you there, there will be a very tense conversation/interrigation. It's taken about 12 years to get them to that state and it was all done by about 4 guys with nothing more than spades, blood and sweat.

As for Gums, and any other set of trails, you will have to get to know the locals and offer to help with any building that is done. Do not pitch up and expect to just jump around at your free will. If you case a jump or take a fall you will be expected to fix the damage straight away, on the spot.

If you spent 12 years building the best set of trails in SA (Gum Trails), you'd know why the locals are weary of newcomers.

There's an old saying : NO DIG, NO RIDE!
