You are lucky that yours passed so quickly.

I was admitted to hospital on a Saturday and then had an operation on the Monday to extract the stone after my body was unable to pass it on it's own. It was very big!

There is no worse feeling than wanting to go to the toilet every five minutes and the pain was unbearable!

The Doc inserted a stent after they had removed the stone, which I then had to pull out of myself three days later.

The stent was about 35cm long... Not a pleasant experience!!!

DRINK, DRINK AND THEN DRINK SOME MORE.

I now make sure that I drink at least 2 litres every day.

Welcome to my world. I have had them like 4 or 5 times. The first one was a bugger. What ride drink are you on? Do you take calcium supplements? There are a lot of things that can cause them stones. But I found since I changed ride juice, I dont get biggies any more.

Have since learnt that my adrenals are messed hence my getting them.

But like Ranga said: DRINK, DRINK AND THEN DRINK SOME MORE

Did you ride the Argus recently and train alot before. How much fluids did you consume on Sunday. I roughly took in 5litres. Do you take any supplements like creatine which push your kidneys into overdrive and if you do not drink 2-3 littes water a day you not flushing your kidneys enough. Hope you feel better soon. They say its worse than giving birth. You lucky it passed so quick sometimes they use lasers to break it down.

Cervelo hits the nail there. Went through the same pain and suffering 4 years ago, 4mm diameter stones, did not pass, had to go under and have it removed from down under...yep....no laser. Extract was the only way.

When you feel one coming, sit in a very hot bath, have a beer. it will relax your kidney and hopefully pass.

Go search for the asparagus and coke treatment of kidney stones. You consume a certain amount of diced asparagus and drink a can of coke every 30mins or so. Can't remember the details anymore.

Basically the coke dissolves the kidney stone and the asparagus is a strong diuretec which will flush it out. A friend of mine did this and it worked rather quickly.

Here is an example:

keep drinking water....when the fluids in your kidneys reach a certain concentration the calcium precipitates and hey presto...little sharp crystal buggers that tear you open as you pass them. used to have one every year...now fluids are consumded almost religiously and not had one in 18months...

I heard carbonatded soft drinks are bad as they have a high level of salts in.

If there's one stuck in your urethra then I've only found one way to help it along....the only way i know of flooding the body with natural pain dulling the endorphins and dilating the urethra....

I've heard a woman say one day on radio she'd give birth 7 times in one day rather than have kidney stones... think I'm due for a beer and a warm bath. But I don't have kidney stones. Will swap it for a wiksey, oh, I'm not allowed to drink... :-(

Have a beer on a regular basis...prevents kidney stones for some reason

I wish this was true for my dad's sake.

He consumes a beer on a regular basis and about 3 years ago was the 1st time I saw him in tears!

He suffered for about 6 days (going to the garden to try a weee - as he didnt want to wake the house) until he had to go to the hospital for them to assist. Shame pore man.

My first stone was a baddie. Had been training hard for Tour de Tuli and racing most weekends then went away for a weekend to my folks place in the bush with friends. Just before Hoedspruit I couldnt sit back I was in such pain. Got some Citro Soda (dont go that route, it apparently aggravates the situation), some urispaz and off I went for a long weekend in the bush with people who didnt know the property. I suffered all weekend, wanting to hurl with pain but only let on to my friends I was seriously sick after day 2 or 3. I was the perfect hostess, showing my guests leopard, getting an elephant to charge us, lions (i think, must have seen them though) and having a fab weekend. The morning we were due to leave I woke up at 2am and thought I was gonna die. I paced for 2hrs, cleaned the freezer and fridge and went to the loo once where i nearly passed out. By 5am I think I passed the bugger cause I fell asleep on the couch.

Friends freaked out on the drive home when I asked if someone had myprodol. My new gp says I must have had a fairly large stone (bigger than 3mm) for me to suffer like that - especially since i have a high pain threshold. My kidneys are also a bit messed now.

When training try avoid using anti-imflamatories - they put strain on your kidneys. In general: Hydrate hydrate, When you think you have had enough, drink another bottle.

Had a couple of them. NEVER nice!!!

I found that if I drink certain energy drinks, i.e. Powerade I have one within two days.......

But yes....water, water, water.

I dread the day those buggers come a nocking on my door. I don't take too kindly to pain and will insist going under to get removed no matter how small they are

Had it once, think it was linked to creatine intake in my case, during Sabie X in rainy weather & probably did not drink enough.

  • 1 year later...

So....

I am grumpy today cause I think I have kidney stones again.... Was supposed to race Nissan series tomorrow but am pulling out. Thought I had a back spasm earlier in the week so went to the physio who said I dont have a lower back spasm though. Feeling worse today so have made the decision not to race and rather see my doc tomorrow. These little suckers are nasty!!
