Matt Posted April 18, 2012 Share Durban – Road closures for the aQuellé Tour Durban presented by Spur road race on Sunday 29 April have been designed to minimise inconvenience to local residents while providing cyclists with the luxury of enjoying riding the city's major routes without threats posed by motor vehicles. "The key to eliminating inconvenience lies in advanced planning," said race director Stu Berry. "From the race's side we will ensure the roads are closed in time for the race and re-opened as soon as it is safe to do so after the last rider has passed." "For the local residents and the fans who want to watch the race, it simply requires a little advanced planning to be able to work out which of the alternate routes is most suitable," he added. The 106km road race routes for the aQuellé Tour Durban presented by Spur. The 106km road race will use major roads and freeways such as the Victoria Embankment (Margaret Mncadi), the M4 Southern Freeway, the Edwin Swales Drive (M7) to Pinetown, Shepstone and Blair Atholl (Rodger Sishi) Roads , the M13 (King Cetshwayo highway), Umgeni road and the M4 coastal freeway to Ballito and back. These routes will be closed for an hour before the first rider is expected, and will be re-opened half an hour after the last rider has passed that point. "We are enjoying superb co-operation from the city and the metro authorities which will ensure that not only will the riders be safe on the roads, but the authorities will be on hand to ensure that the disruption to traffic is kept to an absolute minimum." Berry did encourage residents in the regions used by the 106km road race to identify roads that will not be affected by the road closures and to plan their movements on the Sunday of the race accordingly. "This is a one-in-a-year opportunity to showcase the city at it's best, which we are really excited about," he added. "We are expecting a big influx of riders from outside of Durban for the race, which will have obvious benefits for local businesses. We are really grateful to the local residents for their understanding and co-operation on that day with the road closures."
