Cycling legend

I got to meet one of my biggest cycling inspirations this morning.

Wimpie van der merwe.

When I started cycling back in high school, he set (and still holds) the record for the fastest Argus Cycle Tour avg speed of 47.48 km/h

Dude pitches up at our training ride in his 32yr old Rapport tour jersey, downtube shifters and no helmet.

Style man would have been proud

Ah, Wimpie

Won the SA Road Champs in '86 in East London by breaking away and doing and ITT form most of the 180 km. To say the course was hilly is an understatement. He's a big guy!

One of my many WP idols, together with Wiele, Willie, Hans Degenaar and of course my friend Pierre Smit.

I rember him riding Godswindow winning the race with a single chainring-everybody thought he was not going to last.

  • 7 years later...

First got to know about him from an article Bicycling magazine did about him, maybe 2 years ago now. He's on Strava https://www.strava.com/athletes/3414212?oq=wimpie, I follow him. Dude is still a machine, age is just a number.

He REGULARLY does Everesting challenges, and the 1000 Audax? Just another day at the office! It sounds awfully cliche, but he's done more km on his bike than I've done in my car in 2019 (24000, and counting!!).

Pics are from his 1994 record attempt in Bordeaux for the hour record.
