Mavic Freehub Rebuild- Hubdoctor and others

So my freehub on the crosstrails is used up it would seem and after some googling I found the following on ebay:

Has anybody used it? Basically seems to be an insert and the right size bearing to get ride of the nylon bush- seems like a win to me and half the price of a new mavic hub?

Any comments or advice? I see there are a few rebuild kits that one can buy as well which also seem to be cheaper.

Listen to the man, do it. The plastic/teflon insert kit comes with a set of sealed bearings and freehub pawls if i remember correctly. Crossmark hubs wear our so quickly and you can feel this in the wobble on the cassette body, causes shifting issues and the bike shops will always tell you your chain/cassette is gone. The design is crap i.m.o. and eventually the hub axle body( the part where the teflon washer rubs against the alu when you freewheel.) wears out. I eventually replaced my freehub bushing ( +/- 10 000km with a hub doctor bearing conversion and have since then done at least 5000km without any hassles and my chains/ cassette combos have lasted much longer and are no longer super sensitive to the least bit of wear. The notorious mavic cassette wobble which causes many of the shifting hassles is gone. I reckon the steel bearing will ultimately eat the rest of the hub shaft but at that point the wheels are toast anyway. Great product and service from HUB doctor and would recomment them any day as I would have turfed my mavics long ago had it not been for them.

I have also bought one of these conversions, and got great service from the Hubdoctor.. really professional. The parcel comes beautifully packed with really good instructions. It's a well made piece of kit. However, I haven't installed it yet as my stopgap, homemade, replacement nylon bush (oversized) has lasted for 4 months so far! But eventually I know it will need replacing with my Hubdoctor conversion..

Too many claims for stuff lost in the SA post.  You can try get it via Aramex shop and ship.

I had a problem with my Mavic hub (road)

The bush was worn quite badly and the hub had some damaged as well.

A new Freewheel body did not do the trick duo to the wear on the hub it self.

The rim was still in good nic so no scrapping!

I ordered a replacement bush form the hub doctor but I also did some research on suitable material.

I found a material, Vesconite is a very durable material and ideal for this application.

It doesn't need much lubrication and does well when water manage to penetrate.

 

I had a few made, some slightly smaller than the hub size.

The first one fitted very tight and I had to take some material off to get it on.

I took it off after just over 3000 Km to inspect and check it out. No issues and still within spec.

The 2nd one has almost 7000 Km on it and still no issues.

 

If anyone is interested to fix there Freewheel or for a spare, please feel free to contact me.

I can send you one via post or collect in Cape Town.

Cost is R130 + postage.

I need this in my life, will it fit the MTB hub too?

Mine failed last night at Wolwespruit and I'm not keen to push it and damage anything more.

I trust vesconite much more than nylon as I've had many better experiences in other applications, the better heat tolerance helps too.

To my knowledge it should fit any of the Mavic hubs. I dont have any left but I can get them made within a few days.

It will be about R150 a unit if anyone is interested.

 

The original one I got is still on my Mavic rim and I think it did close to 15 000Km
