MTB route from JHB (North) to Hartbeespoort Dam

Hello cycling friends

For ages now I have been keen to do a mountain bike ride from my home (around the Fourways area) to Hartbeespoort Dam. I have driven there many times and there looks to be some paths on the side of the road in the veld but at some points they disappear.

Has anybody done the ride? If so how was it and do you have any suggested routes?

Cheers

M

yup, suggest riding in a group as there's 1 section you ride through that's pretty close to the Lion Park settlement.

*edit* Here's the segment i sometimes ride. From the 8km - 10km section is the section you might wanna have buddies with you. http://www.strava.com/segments/5316718. there's 1 or 2 variations, but this section is the easiest. From hitting the R512, there's single track along the road to Nikita, and then a dirt road to Broederstroom via the Ale House (an AWESOME microbrewery).

We'll be riding some of the route on Sunday at Ride the Rhenoster (shameless punt )

The Stava link isn't working. Just goes to a page that says:

This is a ride we did from Chicken Pie to Van Gaalens, i guess to get to chicken pie, you can ride out from Broadacres. The path next to the R512 is the one they use for Route 66 race.

We were doing quite a few rides from Nikita to Van Gaalens pre Sani. Nikita is a few km's before the Broedestroom T-Junction.

There was a group we hooked up with that arranged a ride from Cedar to Harties and back.

There was a bit of riding on the road just before harties. The R511 on that stretch is a little narrow with not much space next to the road to ride.

Here's a friends ride from Broadacres to Van Gaalens and back

So there are a couple options to get out to Harties, find one you like or mix and match a route together.

oh yes... another thing.

If you're on Strava, use the Segment Explorer and go to an area more or less where you think you might be riding, have a look at the segments in the area, select one and just click on some of the peoples rides (click on the date) (open in new tab) and that'll show you their ride, sometimes the easiest way to find a new route somewhere...

Obviously if its on or next to a road, it might be a road ride but you should be able to find one that was on a mtb.

it's also a bit of a pain if that segment was within a race as that will probably have private land (like the route 66 day1 route. https://app.strava.com/segments/8921835 )

PM, Manbearpig, he knows that route like the back of his trotter. Once you get used to his smell its a great ride.

Have done the Chicken Pie to VG route before, as mentioned earlier, there are numerous options from Nikita to VG/Harties.

My personal favorite is from Chicken pie, next to to the road on the singletrack, left at Nikita, over the hill ad down to Alehouse, Turn right before alehouse, do the little climb next to the river, take in the view of Harties at the top hit the concrete strips down and then you can either turn around, stop off at the alehouse for beer and pizza before going back to chicken pie.

but there are numeorus iterations of this ride.

I have it on my Garmin connect, no idea how to send it to you, it's 106 km, we went off the route for a bit coming back along the road as some sections are very rocky up hills which I crashed on, so skipped some of them.
