I'm moving to Pretoria and am wondering what is the best area of the city to live in for convenience of road cycling training? Thanks!

Unfortunately the roads in Pretoria are some of the worst to be training on. The only answer is MTB - stay away from the tar. Here are a few mtb trails (hazeldean/tijgerpoort east of pta, voriberg north of pretoria, hakahana west of pta). Just not safe on tar anywhere in SA - taxis, muggings, jackings. Wherever you do go, will be best if you ride in a group.

Far east (towards swawelpoort/boschkop) is decent for mtb.

Road, I believe its all about timing. (If you leave at 05:00 its not that bad)

Pta north east (towards roodeplaat) has some nice safe mtb routes too)

Thanks for the suggestions! I'd like to train mornings before work if possible, so am wondering what areas most training groups leave from? Thanks!

Where will you be working?

Staying as close to your office will be key as that will make travel time MUCH less = more time for cycling.

I have been cycling in Pretoria for 13 years now clocking in about 150 000km. If you train on roads that have shoulders and be vigilant, you will be fine. If it is your time, it is your time....if you stay in Durbs, Pretoria or Katu

Weekend rides you have Cyclelab, Velo and Bruce Reyneke cycles all leaving town on various routes.

As stated above, riding early mornings are better in general, less irritated people and less traffic.
