All I know is that it's very very annoying when the distance is different to that advertised. How hard is it to get it right?

With today's technology, not very hard at all.

 

Cycling SA's guidelines for event organisers indicates that the advertised distance must be within 5km of the actual distance.

BOSFONTEIN MTB ROUTE (50km - 2015)

 

(Two laps of 25km = 50km; Bryton GPS measured 52km in total)

(Baie draaitjies en gaaitjies - it seems that if there are more switchbacks the less accurate the distance measurement via GPS)

Phone GPS app............not so accurate, but at least gives an idea (.GPX file transferred to Google Earth).
