Ironman SA 2015

So, today exactly three months to go. That seems pretty immanent to me.

As a IM virgin training has become frustrating lately. I keep getting colds which is unusual. Took my daughter for two consecutive days of board riding and the standing in water+wind caused a cold. Recovered, did 4 hours mock tri in gym a week later, and ended up with a cold again. I really wanted to be at full swim/bike distances plus 28km running by 31 December, but only managed 2.6km/140km/24km  :cursing:  Patience, right?

After the hype of 2014, what are your thoughts on this year's race?

2.6km /140km / 24km is that your max amount of training in one day so far?

If yes, that is damn decent amount of training for IM and you still got 3 months to go!

Getting sick (colds for example) repeatedly could be a result of putting your immune system under excessive strain.... how many hrs per week are you training and how many days off are you taking per week?

IMO when you doing lots of training i.e. for IM then you should consider taking more than 1 rest day per week (the traditional approach....) to ensure that you recover properly and gain full benefit of the training

If that is the training you have done in one day then u way ahead of me..the most I have done is a half iron man distance in one day and it will be the most i do even in the 3 months to go.

I plan to do another 2 ultras being the trirock cradle and midlands ultra and lots of time on the bike in the next 3 months. Looking forward to IM. Am sitting on PE overlooking Hobie beach as I write this ...

The swim leg and run leg are athlete friendly, the cycle leg is ok I reckon if the wind is westerly...if blowing from the east it's gonna be hell.. Has 800 meters of elevation per 90 km which is not too much but if the wind is against us it's gonna be hell a la 2014

I was having the same issue, but I was recommended an immune booster. I use immunova from biobalance, and has so far worked brilliantly. No only do I avoid sickness from training, but my normal winter cold/flu is gone too.

See what happens.

No, no, no gents, hold the horses  :D. I meant long session for each discipline in the past month.

After high of 16 hours per week during base training, I'm now at 12-14 for build periods. Two weeks on, one week recovery mode. During base I only took one day per week off, but with the long ride+run taking up 7+ hours per week, I'm really doing very little between weekends. During Dec it worked out that I had two off days during most weeks...

Thanks. I did start to think about taking one after my last few incidents.

So, I always see people writing that the IM70.3 will be a "good indication of fitness". What does that mean? What indicator(s) shows where you stand with fitness for IMSA?

I dunno i did not do a 70.3 before my IM (Zurich) last year, but i did do some long rides and runs and really felt sleg afterwards and ended up feeling pretty good on the day of IM....maybe you should suffer at 70.3 if my experience is of any help.....sorri not much help there

I still reckon you are ok....longest ride I have done is 125km but with 1800 meters of elevation, longest swim 5km and 29 km run....

IM is about pacing nor racing , for me anyway.

A 70.3 or ultra does indicate yr level of fitness...if you complete one feeling good and strong it's a good dictator.

We both virgins at this IM thingy.... I have swum the swim leg and run the run leg and driven the cycle leg in the last week andi think the course is pretty good. The only curve ball will be the wind.

Train on hills , there are a couple of big hills but with 800 meters of elevation per lap it's not too tough , wind depending. Cycle leg is also beautiful. The road in places is also not smooth smooth.

Good luck, I reckon u doing well

Hi,

To boost your immune system (and hence reduce the risk of sickness), you might want to consider taking whey protein powder. I do and I find that it helps me to recover more rapidly after a long hard session, or after multiple shorter sessions. The whey products by Pure and by Hammer are both excellent. Not cheap, but effective.

My two cents worth.

Cheers,

Russ

(also an IMSA virgin).

PE... wind... those two names always go together!

Most of the wind in the EC is east so hopefully you get a good day with a west but they arent common.

Hi

You sure, locals I spoke to reckon mostly westerly although the 2014 IM had an easterly wind hence the sufferfest.

Guest DieBees

PM V12man. He is a doctor. Im sure he will be able to give good advice. I believe in basic things. Like covering up after a ride. Making sure you keep warm.then diet and multivitamins. Should help?

I must also say that if I dont take the recovery weeks I tend to also get colds.

Nice, an IM thread! Getting ready for my 1st one, less than 12 weeks to go!

Training wise I have been doing the distance over a week 3.8km/180km/42km but am slowly upping the distances in Jan. Need to do a few longer runs.

To keep my immune system strong I rest 2 days a week and use The Real Thing Ester C

http://www.therealthing.co.za/the-real-thing-ester-cr-combo-and-ester-cr-60s.html

has anyone else used it before?
