Endurance race carry bag

Can u guys give some feedback on the bag? This is for endurance races or longer rides to increase your capacity to carrry all food and equipment without having to have a backpack or having to put allot of stuff in your jersey where there is never enough space. I have used this on one ride and loved it and will be using at next week at the 36one ,but so far really happy. Its also designed to have your tools together in a smaller bag that fits in the larger pocket

Can I ask where you bought it and how much it cost?

This is a prototype that we made (since we needed it) but I like it so much I think its worth making some more if people like them ( I love mine by the way ) very practical

Do you want one?

Looks awesome, also for long distance cycling/touring. My I only concern would be with regards leg/knee interference while standing & pedaling, especially up steep hills.

Hi I have standed up and for the time that I stood up pedaling it did not bother me , I guess if you stand up for a long long time then it could possible be in the way a little , but in the bigger picture that is not an issue for me - I wont not use it because of that - once we complete the 361 this week I will be able to put a full review on it and I will specifically look at the standing and pedal

I would be very interested.

Questions:

Knee strike?

Water resistant?

Padding where it rests on the bar - prevent slipping sideways?

Knee strike not an issue for me sitting or standing - it may be possible that your knees touch the bag when standing but no one rides standing up for long periods and for me this was not an issue at all

It is water resistant material , but if you need to keep something 100% dry just put it into a drybag and put it inside - never possible to keep water out when using zips - I will do a proper water test at some point with a hose pipe just to see how much water it takes to get it wet inside

Padding could cause frictions possibly when added if mud get stuck and it can also suck up water - depending on the material used for padding - in my opinion the best way to prevent any friction is to stick some tape on the bike

In terms of it sitting snug on the bike it does sit very snug

I would just protect any concerned friction areas with tape on a long ride

Once we did the 36One I this week I will put some more feedback

One thing I did realise is at night its so easy to find your stuff right in front of you rather then trying to find it at the back

One other added feature is the nett on the sides for a quick place to put something when you need both hands quickly

I will also put some more pictures later on - I see you cannot really see the nett on the sides of the bag - this creates another 4 areas for putting small items in

I like the idea of having food accessible on the top tube, but that looks a bit too bulky for me.  If you made a smaller version (and without the side pieces) then I'd be interested.

Small compartments inside (opening to the top) would also be nice to have different things easily accessible but also separate from each other.

Does the bike not feel top heavy?

haha I thought of myself when I was a kid delivering papers and my dad made me a news paper carier out of metal - two main issues with this was

1. it does not look cool

2. its was top heavy and when applying the brakes with a full load one day tought me a serious lesson - when flying over the handles

this does not make it feel that way - stability and balance for me was still good

I will also on the race this week still add 2 x batterys for my lights just below the bag in the middle traingle opening

I dont see it being an issue though

Initially it does, but once you ride and you get used to it and the benefits its not an issue at all ( for me)

we are perhaps thinking of making it so that you can take of the side ones and only add them when needed for longer rides

There are quite a few smaller ones already on the market - we made this one specific for the longer endurance riding where you need lots of stuff - there seem to be no bigger ones like this on the market

I think having a smallish one you can fit in a shirt pocket is a great idea for races- that way you keep everything you need together - I have one I use - was an old Molten Brown airline overnight kit - fits everything I need in 1 place - just could use some padding for when you land on it in an off - which is inevitable...

Only question I have is why carry everything for the 361, or any endurance event on the bike?

1. It is not big enough to store clothing items

2. you will normally always stop at feed /water /boxdrop point etc. every 70 to 150 km. If so, you only really need what you can carry in your pocket.

Well that is my limited experience. I have done a number of 200, 300 and 400km rides unsupported and I have never had an issue with not being able to carry everything I needed on my person. Ok, I always tape a 3rd tube and patches to my frame as well as lights. But that is it.

All these rides are done with minimal stopping, typically every 100 or so km. Granted if it is hot and serious MTB territory then bottles are an issue, but they ain't going to fit in there anyway.

I don't get the need to turn your bike into a trailer. What for?

It certainly makes life easier on the bike at night. Why not carry everything with you for the duration of the 361? A new challenge? If you ride with a camelback I suppose you are ok but still have to stop to take things out.
