Rides like a dream, shifting is supreme -  I give you the 1x8 result for less than R2000

A few things to note : Went for a new chain (KMC) seeing as the rest of the drivetrain is new. Also opted for a new BB while we were at it. I now have a brand new drivetrain that covers a wider range of ratios (front:rear) than I previously had.

There are NO problems with the 8speed Sora STI and 8speed MTB Acera derailleur + Acera 11t-34t cassettes. It really does shift effortlessly, better than before in fact. I guess spacing only became a problem beyond 8 speed.

Top derailleur pulley went MIA on my morning commute, it had only done 10km

Picked up a Deore RD-M591 and will be fitting that later.

Update, now on 1x9

The old 1x8 served me well, most significant rides I did on it was two double Argus' (2016 / 2018) and two One tonners. When I learned that 9 speed also shares the same cable pull on road STI as on MTB setups I ordered some "MicroShift" STI levers from Aliexpress and bought a 11t-40t Sunrace cassette at a local bikeshop.

Well it all came together recently so now my 2002 Giant OCR3 has a FSA crank with single 50t Deckas NarrowWide chainring, Shimano HG93 9 speed chain,  Sunrace CSM980 11t-40t cassette and the Deore 9 speed derailleur I fitted back in 2015.

Will be trying it out in the next week or so. Looks like it will be a vast improvement over the old 11t-34t 8speed I had.

Nice, Rouxenator!

I am getting ideas for my old hardtail hanging in the garage at the moment...mmmmm

The only thing I found with the 1x8 setup was the chain jump was a tad high and it would derail the front in about 3% of shifts. So I am hoping with 1x9 that is solved as when I started out with 1x it was a 1x9 MTB setup.

If it does drop the chain I'll just fit the trusty old Claris FD that I use as a chain guard.

I built up a 1x10 on Ultegra components and took it around the Asturias region in Spain for a week around the Vuelta last year. 48t up front and a 11-42 cluster on the back with a wolftooth deraileur hanger extension. Great ride, and I made it up the A'ngliru without stopping (steepest at 23.5%) so I definitely wasn't short of gears.

My only complaint is that the shifts between the mid range gears can be a bit severe if you're grinding away on the valley roads and trying to hold your pace. But a great fun bike to ride nevertheless.

I have since changed to an sunrace 11-40 11s cluster with an ultegra 11s RD (because you can get an 11s MTB cluster on the old freehub, but not a road cluster).

Does the 9 speed Deore rear derailleur handle the 40t sprocket without any issues? Did you have to use a longer B-screw?

Meh, just pedal harder. What got to me on the 1x8 setup was that last jump between 26t and 34t, especially on longer rides towards the end, but that's part of the fun.

Works fine, stock B-screw. I have the 10speed Deore M615 on my MTB and it handles 42t with the stock B-screw so these "cheaper" rear derailleurs do go a long way.

I still have a new 8 speed 11t-40t Sunrace cassette that I need to find a good use for.
