Nasty accident on the R114 between Hernon Bridge school and Northern Farm

Came across a cycle accident on our way to the farm this morning.

Judging by the damage to the car and the bicycle it looked like the car had hit the cyclist from behind very hard.

Ambulance etc on the scene. Hope the cyclist makes it.

I also saw that on my way to the farm. I phoned er24, as there were no ambulances on scene yet. Didn't want to stop, my 7 year old daughter was with me.

From the carnage on scene, I don't think it's possible that the cyclist survived. RIP.

That new part of the road is extremely dangerous. Taxis overtake on the blind rises and everyone drive in the yellow lanes. I never drive faster than 50km/h on that road.

I had about 4 near miss head-on collisions on that piece of road in the last two months. Very scary. Everyone please be very cautious when driving to and from Northern Farm.

Another one(in the cape), the photos shows the car fully engulfed in fire,,,

Cape Town - A cyclist is in a critical condition after he was hit by a car on the R501, 7km outside Potchefstroom, on Sunday afternoon, ER24 confirmed.

Spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived at the scene and found the cyclist lying on the side of the road.

"The light motor vehicle had come to a stop 30 metres away and was well alight. Fire services began to extinguish the blaze while paramedics assessed the cyclist," he said.

"The cyclist was found with severe injuries to his head and was in a critical condition. Paramedics treated the patient and provided him with advanced life support interventions."

Once treated, the man was taken to Potchefstroom Hospital for urgent treatment.

No occupants in the car were injured in the collision, Meiring added.

Authorities were on scene for further investigations.

Way too many of these happening, hope the cyclist pulls through

I damaged 2 wheels and suspension by swerving off the road to avoid an oncoming taxi on my side of the road, right by heron bridge school, on the way to Northern farm. Really bad road.

Was this a cyclist on the road riding up on the way to Northern Farm? I have seen a number of road clubs use that route and have always been frightened for them as the taxis are truly scary there.

If I am correct it was on the narrow section of the road or was it on the new section?

It was on the new section. Looked like an old Jetta, windscreen was broken from (I would imagine) the rider hitting it. Bike mangled completely - didn't look good.

Two weeks ago, coming from northern farms I passed heron bridge, going up the hill towards cedar rode, shortly after Passing HB I'm sitting 4 or 5 cars behind a dilapidated bakkie doing about 60 up the hill. No problem, here comes an even more dilapidated taxi trying to overtake the entire row of cars, clearly not enough power.... sits in the right hand (oncoming traffic) lane... solid white line... up a hill, wrong side of the road, oncoming traffic and not a care in the world... basically to get onto the correct side of the road he cuts in front of me leaving mm between us and yes, I had actually slowed to allow him in to prevent a nasty head on. It didn't matter though because he was determined to pass everyone and half a second after almost wiping me out embarked on his quest to continue overtaking which came within about 40 metres of again almost causing the most massive head on collision as the oncoming car had the presence of mind to pull over and hit the dirt. Had he not... well.. wouldn't have been pretty.

Something needs to be done. We say it daily but to no avail. It is disgusting how these okes are allowed to get away with murder, and I mean that in all senses. Monday morning rant off but keep it safe out there.

On Sunday, at exactly the same spot as happened to you, an old bakkie tried to over 5 of us. Same hill. just past the bridge. Blind rising bend, farm entrances on left and right - he didn't give a toss. wtf.

I think that's what P*&%$& me off.

1. The oke in my case didn't care. Unless you are utterly brain-dead and literally your corpse is still on autopilot from the KFC you ate earlier you will KNOW that you don't have the ability to overtake and hence you would wait it out like the rest of us. (5 mins maybe)

2. Its Sunday morning. Where in the universe could you be going in such a hurry that is so important that you knowingly and without caution pull out into on coming traffic to attempt to overtake when it is so clearly a mistake.

3. Is it feasible that a human being can be that unbelievably stupid, so morosely devoid of intelligence not to know that their actions are likely to have devastating consequence? Even the most basic of life forms have a 'self protection" strategy which would include having a clue that driving head on into another object is likely  to not end well??

or am I wrong? Does the perpetrator just have so little grey matter or just so much of a screw everyone else attitude that it doesn't matter, because someone else will (at their own peril) take evasive action to accommodate the actions of the other idiot.

I sat back and wondered, when, not if, that driver was going to cause multiple deaths, because make no mistake, when he did it on my occasion, it was not the first time and will certainly not be the last so, I guess his death is inevitable, its just when and how many other deaths he causes.

The mind boggles.

Is there a chance that his reasoning is that "someone always seems to makes way" for him, as you did, so why should he worry? Is he relying on other peoples "self preservation" mechanisms preventing an accident?

Of course if that's the case then it's only a matter of time before he comes across someone using the same logic - and the two of them will come unstuck in a big way. Typically with the headline "16 people seriously injured . . .  etc"

The R501 is the road from Potch to Viljoenskroon. It is sketchy at best. I live on a smallholding on that road and can testify to drivers and cyclists/commuters not always considering one another.

Yip, seems that's the case, and in essence I couldn't give a continental the problem though is he will cost lives other than his own,,,,, and that's sad, because its so easily prevented.

I hear you - I have had similar on that road.

I am very wary of any oncoming traffic and dont make any assumptions about what they are going to do. I havent had to, but many time I have been ready to take to the dirt.

I have seen taxis come over over the bridge over the Jukskei side by side (2 x taxis) alongside each other at high speed. Oncoming cars would have no chance and neither would they.

I reckon there is an agenda that is solely reserved for the kind of machismo a taxi driver has - which is actually totally unrelated to their safety. Its almost like a total annilhation agenda. Like a suicide bomber. these people are not seeing the side of the discussion you are pointing out and they are not trying to avoid death nor killing of others. I say this genuinely and with all seriousness. I think they want to kill others and intentionally are dangerous and confrontational for a completely different reason - to maybe live dangerously, be threatening and be tough.

Sorry to go in to the details of the accident but just wanting to try and piece it together.

So from what you saw the guys was hit from behind by the Jetta when on the tar (new wide tar) which means likely to be riding up the road in the yellow line.

MTB or Road bike? I would assume MTB.

So it would appear the guy was cycling up the yellow line and got collected from behind, or was that not clear i.e. it could have been head on?

The crazy thing is that the road from the top of N Timbers hill to N Farm must be about 6 km but its so stupidly dangerous along there - i reckon its probably safer to go out to the cradle rather than this route.

BTW - I have noticed that the taxis will take much larger chances earlier on in the day than later as they think the road is clear earlier so head ons are unlikely. When it gets busier there is no chance for stupidity.

The accident was just as you go over the brow of the hill on the new road, traveling towards NF. Maybe 150m into the new surface?

The bike was an MTB - but I couldn't say if it was a proper MTB (ie mountain biker) or a commuter MTB (ie someone going to work)

I'm pretty sure the bike was on the left hand side of the road (N14 side) when it was hit - but depending on whether it was an MTB'er heading towards NF or a commuter heading from (say) Diepsloot, it could have been either rear or head-on.
