Best book I bought this holiday season was this collection of V for Vendetta. Contains the original material which was edited for other collections.

This was great too - bought it before the holidays but only got around to finishing it the other day - Kurtzman was a forerunner of what Moore was to become...

Also good was Martin Rowson's re-imagining of Gulliver's Travels.

EDIT:

Was last holiday

Cracking China by Rod Mackenzie

Think its only available as a kindle download, but really enjoyed it, light, easy, funny and a good peek at how the other half live

Cracking China is an account of Rod and his wife Marion’s adventures in the land of chopsticks and Chinglish. Written in the witty style typical of Rod’s popular blogs, this memoir takes a candid look at China through the eyes of a Westerner, and manages to ‘crack’ open the not-so-subtle nuances of Chinese culture, exposing the in-your-face squalor and intrusiveness, while demonstrating the easy-going and childlike nature of its people.

Great read from a great storyteller.  More "hartseer" than his earlier works.

A book by Dr Burton, on some  historical stories in the Border region, called Sparks From the Border Anvil, that I found about 6 months ago. It's very disjointed, and I put the book down about 3/4 of the way through, but the first story about the Gcaleka Xhosa's cattle killing in the 1850's was  very interesting, especially as I was  riding past Nongqause's pool , and the site of Mhlakaza's kraal on the Gxara river every other day.

I consider reading to be one of life's little pleasures.

I read these four books during the holidays.

Each and every one was excellent.

I read Iron Fist from the Sea, Douw Steyn and Arne Soderlund...after reading Recce by Koos Stadler. Two really nicely balanced books that cuts the c r a p out and presents the facts in easily readable format.

Also read Spymistress by William Stevenson...it has been a while since I have negatively rated a factual work, but unfortunately the author's writing style was poor and he did Vera Atkins no favours by him telling the story. Some really interesting facts in the book, but generally speaking so flippen difficult to read it became a chore at the end.

Some light reading between hiking/swimming/cycling/river volleyball / braaiing:

Into the Wild (Jon Krakauer)

Different Seasons (Stephen King) - got the book because wanted to read ShawShank redemption, but the other 3 stories were also most entertaining: Apt Pupil, Breathing Method and the Body.
