Hey all.

I'll be spending the long weekend in Magoebaskloof. Anyone have any suggestions for nice MTB routes around there? I'm not too fussy, they can be long or short, technical single track or basic district roads, whatever, just wana get out on my bike a bit.

Ah so jealous - i was there a few years ago - Loved it - want to go back again now that I can ride a bit better. We just rode around from the Magoebaskloof hotel road - and went through the Sappi forests and basically just followed all trails / routes that weren't marked as private / No entry. The guys at the hotel tried giving us directions but they were rather clueless.

There are loads around Haenertsburg. Full green, blue and red loops. You easily do 60km through the forests. No start or end - you can hop on at Cheerio or Stanford Lake College. There are also a myriad of forestry roads - I took 15 boys from Magoebas' Broederstroom hut to Black Forest close to Haenertsburg using just forestry roads - that's 30km one way. It really is cycle heaven.

Check out Google Maps and make your own route, or enquire at Haenertsburg Tourism or Cheerio Lodge or Zwakala Lodge..

if you get in touch with any of the hotels / lodges in the area - you get a permit and off you go.

from magoebaskloof  tourism website
http://www.magoebasklooftourism.co.za/mountain-biking.php (don't know if that cost is up to date - sure we paid a bit more (about 2.5 years ago that i was there)

The Magoebaskloof area is fast becoming a mecca for mountain bikers. Various Mountain Biking events are hosted in the area and marked trails have been established by TMA. These link accommodation providers making them easily accessible. Permits are required to use these trails and are available at Cheerio Gardens, Cheerio Trout Lodge, Sequoia, Bramasole and the Magoebaskloof Hotel. The cost is R20 per day and kids under 12 are free. Forgot your bike? Rent one. Bikes for rent

On this point, anyone did some routes from ATKV Die Eiland? I see on their website they say cycling is an activity, but anyone know if there are actual MTB routes from there?

Hi guys,

Im going to be in Magoebaskloof this coming weekend and want to try hit some trails.

I see there are a few trails around that I can easily jump onto, but I would like to find out if anyone knows of any of the locals that I could contact and ride with?

I dont really want to ride by myself so I would prefer to ride in a group for safety reasons.

Thanks in advance.

Rob.

Safety is really not a thing. We have been going there with kids for two years now, never any issues. When we started investigating the area as a likely spot for our major school outing, and asked about safety, we got a few strange looks from the locals. Locked gates are not a thing.

If you really want to take someone along, the two oukes in the Adventure dept at Stanford Lake College are keen cyclists racing snakes. I can probably try and find a number if you want.

444kms later I got to the start of the Green Route at Cheerio Gardens as shown in the GPS maps I managed to find online. I was definitely in the right place... It's where the Magoebaskloof Tourism website says you can start the trail, where the GPS route started and there were signs all over the place saying mountain bike trails blah blah blah.

Long story short, the trails are not maintained and impossible to use!

I phoned every place on route to ask if they had mountain bike trails and they all insisted they do, but none of them could tell me if the trails were maintained. It's terribly sad that a place with such amazing scenery and trails were not being maintained and not to mention a huge waste of my time and money!

I wouldn't recommend that anyone tries going for a ride here unless you know the trails have been cleaned.

Reviving an old thread...

Has anyone ridden the area recently and have any info on the state of the trails?

I was in the area this December and had a small sampling of the trails starting from Cheerio gardens.

Friendly folks - no permit needed but they advised that the easiest way to get around was to join the Magoebaskloof mtb group on Strava and follow the routes from there (the Cheerio garden parking area).

I really didn;t get in the amount of riding that i wished due to the amount of rain over the weekend I was there but, the yellow trail that I did was a bit overgrown in places and we got lost near the main road when the trail markings contradicted each other as to the correct route to follow. I should've just gone the Strava route.

Beautiful area though with lots of elevation. I d like to go back and try again.
