10 Spd Derailleur on a 11 speed Cassette

Hi Hubbers,

I recently just bought a Wahoo Kickr and a 10 SPD cassette, but i was wondering if the 10 spd Cassette is necessary? Can I not use my 10 spd bike on the 11 spd Kickr?

I understand that i wont be able to use the whole gear range but its just temporary until I have time to take the Kickr to an LBS to be changed.

As you can see Im very eager to ride :)

You can use the 10 speed rear dérailleur on an 11 speed cassette with no issues at all but you can not use 10 speed shifters on an 11 speed cassette.

Your problem is the shifter, not the dérailleur.

You will need a 10 speed cassette on your kickr.

Short answer - no. The gear spacing is different and your chain will be too wide at the outer edges to fit between the sprockets without affecting shifting.

what he said. You gonna wear something out and its usually the most expensive part.

And the chain, correct?

And the chain, correct?

Technically correct but immaterial as the shifter will not find the correct cog on the cluster to stop clicking trying to change to a better cog.

A 10 speed chain is usable on the 11 speed cluster but with smaller tolerances. An 11 speed chain is 5.75mm wide, 10 speed is 5.95mm wide. Internal width is the same.

OP really has no option but to find a 10 speed cassette that matches that on his bike in ratios. Used will be no problem.

To throw a curve ball, .......if you find a cog on the cassette where there is no wear or jumping and you use the kickr in ERG mode where the trainer does the electronic braking and you do not have to change gears... then you should be ok short term.

If however you not in ERG workout mode and are either free riding or creating your own workouts and using gears for resistance then will not work and will need to match shifters to cassette.

Didnt know there was such a difference between 11 and10 spd. I thought it was just a cog difference. Hopefully my LBS is still open by the time i get home.

Otherwise im worried that i might just succumb to Shaper's theory

So re-reading you opening post, if you have a 10spd cassette and a 10spd bike, why you needing anything else??

If the Kickr came with an 11spd cassette, just remove it and fit your new 10spd cassette? or am I missing something?

@Shaper,

Just bought it and I thought I will not have the time today to take it to an LBS today.

Been waiting for one for more than a year, so I really want to ride it today and unfortunately i lack the tools (chain whip and torque wrench)

Im a kid in a candy store

I would wait and get the LBS to change cassette then you can sell the brand new 11spd cassette... rather than a used 11spd cassette

Get yourself a SLX 10 speed cassette fitted on the kickr .They last forever ,and sell the 11 speed one

The tools required to change the cassette (chain whip and torque wrench) are actually so cheap, I rather put my effort in buying some and do it myself, that taking trainer and wheels to bike shop every  time -watch a Youtube video if you not sure how to use them.

I've got a bike with what was originally an 8 speed rear derailleur with 9 speed shifter and using a 10 speed chain.
