PPA 12 Hours of Killarney is back! How many laps can you complete in 12 hours? Can you beat the 2017 record of 129 laps / 417 km (Solo)? There is a R5 000 cash prize on offer for the record. In addition, the top 3 male solo riders and top female solo rider will win prize money, with gold medals to the top 10 solo finishers on the day.

Join us on Sunday 8 April at the Killarney Motor Racing Track in Milnerton and come and test your endurance legs. You can participate as an individual (solo) rider, in a pair of 2 riders, or in a team of 4 riders.

Pairs and teams will ride in relays, with one rider being on the track at a time. While a minimum number of laps must be completed to get a bronze medal, there is no set number of laps that each team member must complete and pairs/teams can decide for themselves when to change over and/or when to take a rest. Similarly, as a solo rider you can decide for yourself when you want to ride and how many laps you want to do before taking a break.

While the event officially starts at 06h00, you are welcome to start your onslaught any time between 06h00 and 08h00 if you are not gunning for the lap record challenge. Your last lap (for medal and prize winning purposes) must be started before 18h00, and must be completed before 18h10.

Entries close at 23h59 on Thursday 05 April. Since the names of riders participating in pairs and teams must be linked and pre-loaded onto the results database, late entries on the day of the event can be taken only for solo (individual) riders.

Medals will be performance-based:
· Gold medals to the top 10 solo riders and top female solo rider;
· Silver medals to all riders completing 60 laps and more;
· Bronze medals to all riders completing between 35-59 laps.

Prize money for the top 3 riders in the solo category and the top solo female rider. Prize giving will take place at 18h30 or as soon as the results have been finalized by Racetec.

Please bring along your PPA funride number, Racetec timing chip (no chip, no time) and helmet.
Also bring along some food and snacks (no open fires will be allowed), although there will be vendors offering food and coffee for sale during the event. Gazebo’s /club gazebo’s are welcome. Water and Powerade will be offered at the change-over point.

Important: Please bring your bicycle lights along to use between 06h00-07h00 as there will be areas along the track where it will be dark (there are no lights around the track, other than around the pits/start area). We recommend some spare batteries and even a head lamp too, as well as all the bicycle spares that you think you may need during the day, including enough inner tubes. As conditions will change during the day, do bring something warm to wear, including arm warmers and a jacket, as well as something warm to wear after the event.

RULES
· Complete as many laps possible in 12 hours.
· Riders can enter solo (individual), in pairs, or in teams of 4.
· It's a relay for pairs and teams: Only one rider per team/pair will be allowed on the track at a time.
· The event starts at 06h00 and the last lap must be started before 18h00 and completed by 18h10. Riders are, however, welcome to start riding any time between 06h00 and 08h00.
· 16 years and older only

DIRECTIONS TO VENUE
From the N1, take the N7 North and exit at the Table View / Refinery off-ramp onto Plattekloof Road (M14). Turn right on Koeberg Road and continue straight across Blaauwberg Road). Please use the southern entrance to Killarney (follow the signs). Signs will direct you to one of the designated parking areas.

GPS co-ordinates: Latitude: 33,8253 Longitude: 18,5296

NOTES

It's Sunday  :eek:

What's the logistics like when it comes to storing your gear while on the track? Not going to have support there most of the day

Lock it in your car. That's what I did last year. Also. Take off any pumps, saddlebags etc. Pointless carrying that around the same 3.2km track.

Except I'm being dropped off, then abandoned by my spectator... this is going to be interesting

anyone know of the puncture rate lately for bicycles at Killarney?

Hmmm... So was a good day out, we were lying third most of the day due to an early puncture, then at prize giving they gave 4th place the 3rd. A little bleak, even his strava is 15km shorter than ours. Oh well, luckily in Pure Savage fashion we have claimed it on social media :P

RaceTec's lap count is properly wonky. Managed to not count three of my laps, too. Not that it makes any difference, 'cos Strava is the ultimate oracle.
