Desi Posted April 4, 2018 Share Come on, Hubbers – we’re inviting you to chill, ride your bike AND help a fellow Hubber out! There are no prizes for the winners, no podiums, no timing, so forget about Strava, chill with your wife and kids or with fellow cyclists and appreciate the fact that you’re ABLE to ride your bike.Venue: Contermanskloof farm, Contermanskloof Road, BellvilleDate: Saturday, 14 April 2018 | Time: 15:30http://cycleforlife.co.za/joe/It’s not a race, it’s a celebration of being ABLE to ride your bike.Fellow Hubber Joe spent many happy hours on his bike until he took a fall last September and sustained serious spinal injuries. We are holding a fun mtb event at Contermanskloof to raise money to help Joe with the costs of ongoing rehabilitation and therapy. We know that you can ride these trails at any time, free if you’re a TMBC member, but you’re not really paying for a ride, you’re making a donation to Joe, and getting to ride your bike at the same time – bonus! Ride your bike, enjoy the scenery. There are 4 routes to choose from, to suit the whole family. And of course, if you can’t make it on the day, well, we’re happy to accept your donation too! Use the ‘enter now’ button on the website, don’t choose a route, but do choose to make a donation. It will be most appreciated. Desi Posted April 5, 2018 Share I saw Joe this morning. The good news is that he has put on some weight (he lost a lot of body mass after the accident), and built up some muscle. There are signs of steady and continued progress in the use of his hands and feet, but this progress is agonizingly slow, which is obviously extremely frustrating for Joe, but he continues to put in the work required, plus much more. The bad news is that the final physio/occupational therapy session paid for by the medical aid took place last week, so any further sessions are for his own account. There is a real chance for Joe to regain the full use of his hands and feet, and he is doing everything he can to achieve this - we just need to do our bit to help him! His goal is to some day, some time in the future, be able to get back on his bike and ride again. CatzSpace "frail" and T-Bag68

Ian Kirkwood Posted April 5, 2018 Share Joe was a great help to a lot of us starting out Mountain Biking; the only thing that stopped it was his fall on one of the trails while riding with us. So let's help him all we can to get his mobility back. T-Bag68
Desi Posted April 10, 2018 Share Even if you're doing the Philadelphia mtb ride in the morning, no problem: go flat out on that ride, then join us for a rustige ride on Saturday afternoon, to enjoy the scenery and smell the fynbos! Giant Durbanville donated a massive amount of spot prizes, so there's a good chance that you'll walk away with a spot prize, too! joevan Posted April 15, 2018 Share I just want to thank all who organized and supported the Ride for Joe, yes that is me.I am humbled by the support that I have had since my fall last September, but seeing all the cyclists at the event, some old friends and some new, made me realise why I love cycling. It's still going to be long road before I can get back on the bike again, but you are all the motivation I need to keep working on recovery. joevan Posted June 27, 2019 Share An update on my progress.Up to November 2018, I was making slow but steady progress, could walk short distances, and generally take care of myself, even drive my car (AT).Then in November started going backwards had several falls and fractured left hip. After two weeks in hospital and several specialists, was told that nothing could be done to improve my status. But I will not accept this, I am going to carry on exercising and carry on with therapy which has already cost me over R30k over the last year which medical aid will not cover.Twice a week when we drive along Marine Drive to the therapists I see the cyclists on the cycle path and cry inside. But the possibility of riding on two wheels again is remote So I started investigating 3-wheel recumbents and found a local supplier in Cape Town. I am trying to raise R40k to purchase one of these so that I can enjoy the cycle track instead of just watching it! https://www.backabuddy.co.za/champion/project/joe-van-gent
