I've got a race coming up on the east coast of Aus, thus traveling from SA will invoke the inevitable jet lag.Obviously I want to perform at my best, thus I would like to mitigate the effects as mush as possible. Questions:1. For those of you that have traveled to the east coast of Aus:a. When did the effects of the lag hit you?b. How long did it last?c. How many days before the race do you recommend to arrive in Aus, to be race ready?2. Please post any successful precautions and/or remedies (including 'boererate') you have found to actually work to diminish the effects of jet lag. stefmeister Posted May 31, 2018 Share Usually within a week I've adjusted, and going back (with the clock) was much quicker, like a day or 2. It probably depends on each individual. I thank you in advance Hi I went to NZ in 2016 for IMTAUPO and travelled via Sidney.. I went to Dr Rob Collins at the Rosebank Sports Clinic who has experience with this for the Lions Rugby Team. He gave me a Protocol to mitigate the effect. So I hope to Answer your questions anecdotally: When you arrive at the Airport take Melatonin and tried to saty away from bright lights-he recommended red lensed glasses-but I wasnt gonna look like John Lennon after a night of debauchery so skipped that and stayed calm and in soft light at the Lounge. After two hours on the flight pop your sleeping tablets and go to sleep. None of that watching movies etc. When you wake up immediately set your watch and your body to the local time in your destination. Then try to adhere as much to local time as possible. Also take sleeping tablets if you battle to sleep but stop about 2 days before the race. I found the trip out wasnt that bad but coming back it hit me harder than going there. Vetseun Posted May 31, 2018 Share True story.We are in the building industry.I recently had to go and give a quote to a lady.Get there, she appologises if she looks a touch wasted but she has terrible jet lag.I say so sorry to hear, when did she fly in?She says on the 6am flight from Joburg this morning!Turns out she had been visiting her kids in Joburg and the only flight back that she could get was the 6am flight.JHB to Bloem is a 40 minute flight. Have lunch or dinner in the lounge and then get to sleep when you get on the plane. take eye shades and earplugs. sit in a window seat. Paul Ruinaard Posted May 31, 2018 Share Normally West to East kills me the most. FWIW: The aircrews allow a day a time zone - FWIW. So if you fly to San Francisco on Sunday from London that same aircrew only flies back Thursday evening. That was Virgin. That early morning flight from Jhb to CTN - the 6am -kills me as badly. Paul Ruinaard Posted May 31, 2018 Share I use sleeping tabs, Noise canceling headphones and a sleep mask. Eat on the ground before the flight. Airline food is terrible. Try and stay awake at the other side as late as possible and then also exercise if you can. Melatonin is also used by some people. I have used it but it made me feel worse. Do you mean it is on a banned substance list? I for one, could never fell asleep in a tent in a race village, at multi stage events, without the help of a prescription sleeping drug, earplugs, and sleep mask. Did a bit of travelling for a couple of yrs recently.Found these ear plugs worked best for long periods without giving pain. 4k for noise cancelling is quite steep, but i did that as well.Eye coversEat before you board and sleep on the plane if you can, as mentioned.I am another druggie who takes sleeping tabs. I also use them to sleep from time to time anyway when i struggle to sleep. I am unfortunately not one of those who can meditate and fall asleep in 2 minutes.Worst time was 3 days after landing going W to E. Try to get good sleep as much as possible when you land. geomark Posted May 31, 2018 Share Only thing I would add to (some ) good advice above around getting sleep etc is the best way of syncing into the new time zone I have found is having as much time in natural sunlight as possible when you get there, outdoor activity etc. For me at any rate it helps acclimatization, if i am office/hotel/conference bound straight away at the far end it takes far longer.
