Sven137 Posted October 19, 2018 Share These pointless Cycle lanes in the Sandton CBD really go no-where ... when will they build proper lanes linking the towns like Randburg to SandtonRiviona to SandtonFourways to SandtonNorthcliff to RandburgFairland to Randburg Or from other towns making a proper cycling network i only see Alex to Sandton ... once the bridge is rebuilt. You know real cycle lanes like Cape Town ? Edited October 19, 2018 by Sven137

Swany05 Posted October 24, 2018 Share Cycle lanes will always be an issue in SA. no respect for the rules or other road users. Even the dedicated bus lanes in JHB are used by taxis. No reinforcement scubes

Robbie Stewart Posted October 24, 2018 Share There is only one cycle lane in Cape Town that actually goes anywhere the Melkbos - Cape Town. The rest are bits and pieces all over the place that dont connect to each other I get your point. Technically that lane goes from Melkies to Town, but in reality, it does not, seeing as you are very likely to get separated from your bike, phone and anything else you might have on you once you reach Paarden Island... MudLark Posted October 24, 2018 Share There was a plan in Johannesburg to put in cycle lanes from Sandton to various of the suburbs (including Rosebank) but my impression is that it has been scrapped because of budgetary constraints since the DA came in. I did send a query to my local councillor quite a while ago in this regard and he promised to make an enquiry but never did get back to me. Might be worth following up on. dave303e Posted October 24, 2018 Share On this note guys Openstreetmap has a dedicated cycling map called opencyclemap, this could be an epic resource, through openstreetmap you can contribute your gps data or digitize data and really it could be an epic go to for all of us cyclists, there are a lot of tracks already there, it just needs constant updating and improvements, but if you go there and fix your local cycle routes it will only get better and better for all.. https://www.opencyclemap.org/ cat-i

Danger Dassie Posted October 24, 2018 Share The corridor of pedesterian and cycle access to Alex is exceptional and probably the most important example. At least it's one example the previous administration got right.Absolutely nothing like it in Cape Town. In fact my experience with cycle lanes in CT is that the touristy/recreational corridors are great. But for commuting they are pretty much ignored by everyone and/or pose a risk. Parts of Woodstock come to mind. Joburg has some great sections such as Sophiatown, UJ and Westdene. Well designed, well made and provide a barrier from most of the traffic. Although the flow at some of the intersections are problematic.Sadly many of these were let down by a combination of bad implementation and enforcement on other areas of cyle lane access. Which is to be expected in a long term goal, it takes years to get these things into place. Especially with changing the mindset and culture of a car obsessed public. Unfortunately the pooch got screwed when cycle and pedesterian lanes got used a political football and ultimately the proverbial sacrificial lamb of the DA/EFF. cat-i
