Cargo/Pannier/Rear Racks

Hi

I commute to work a couple of days a week in Cape Town and I have always struggled with carrying my laptop, charger, clothes etc in a backpack. I hurt an intercostal muscle between my ribs the other day so I'm trying to look for alternatives to carrying everything on my back.

I recently came back from Amsterdam and used the cargo rack on the back of the bike to carry my backpack around and it worked great. Unfortunately it is proving difficult to find a simple affordable rear rack in SA.

I don't really need panniers, just something to strap my bag to, like this: https://za.ciclimattio.com/s/bontrager/backrack-l-disc-2018/?id=1989&m=3154

The only place I have found is cycle touring but these are fairly high end pannier racks which would work but are quite expensive.

Does anyone know where I can find something like this locally, preferably in Cape Town?

Thanks

I couldn't find 'commuter' price-range pannier racks locally unless you scavenge something off classifieds.

I opted for West Biking / Roswheel pannier combo through Aliexpress and they are suitable for even corrugated dirt roads. You would just need to replace all the nuts with proper Nyloc nuts that can be bought from a Builders Warehouse.

You would obviously have to wait for 5 months for the package to arrive at your post office..

Perhaps put a wanted ad in the Classifieds?

Someone was selling something like this a month or two ago. Not sure of the make but it was a seat post clamped rack like in the picture....

Thule make a bike rack that clamps to the seatstay. Costs around R1500 if I remember correctly.

Thanks all, I've asked for a quote.

Don't know where you are based, but if in Cape Town, I'll tell you a little secret: Woodstock Cycle Works have a few of those racks, second hand, but in very good shape, lying around the haystack that is WCW. You'll score a big time bargain. Make Niels an offer. Can't imagine him wanting more than a few hundred bucks for it. Just leave one or two for me, because I'm also interested, for the same reason. Planning to put it on the young Ds commuters.

Alternatively, if you want new, Olympic Cycles in Claremont has exactly the same thing.

I see Woodstock Cycle Works is just up the road from my work. I'm going to pop in today to have a look, otherwise Bike Addict has confirmed stock so I'll have to fork out for a new one. Thanks!

They only had some cheap racks that wouldn't fit my bike but the shop is very cool. Luckily I had a meeting back at work otherwise I would probably still be there. I ordered the Explorer off Bike Addict. Now I just need to wait for it. Thanks for the help everyone!
