Garden Route road cycling

I am going to be spending a couple of days in the Wilderness area this weekend.

Can anybody recommend some decent (and hopefully safe!) road routes?

I was thinking of riding Outeniqua pass as part of a route. Wonder if anybody has ridden that and if it is safe to ride with respect to cars and trucks etc?

I am going to be in Natures Valley for a week and just taking the Pyga.I remember doing the Knysna road race and the main road was a nightmare.

I have cycled from Sedgefield up to the Outeniqua pass but on my last visit to the area last year I pretty much soiled myself on that stretch from Wilderness to Kaimans.  It should be ok not riding in peak hours though.  Otherwise I would suggest taking the bike by car maybe to the Garden Route mall and start out from there or cycle out towards Knysna which was fine the last time I was there.  Just bear in mind I have not cycled those roads in December holidays. That could change your perspective a bit.  The Outeniqua pass was well worth it.

Emergency lane in that part of the world becomes the slow lane when drivers want to get past other cars, like the whole move over to let the speeders through then they blip their hazards etc to say thx,

No way would I be riding in emergency lane in that area.

Area being Plett to Knysna to Sedgefield etc.

Any time I have driven along there I always thought how dangerous it must be to cycle there, I could be wrong of course, the coathangers all going down there prob doesnt improve the situation.

Road cycling here at this time of the year wouldn't a good idea in my opinion, way to much traffic for the roads in this area.

From Wilderness, up whites road, smooth gravel perfect on my 26c - at the top turn left on seven passes road to George, newly tarred - at the end of road turn around a go back - 45km very safe, little traffic, plenty hills - add outeniqua pass big shoulder not too stressful + 40km

From wilderness go to N2 and after head towards sedge - after 3 km take hoekwil turnoff and climb serpentine on brand new tar with small shoulder - ride till tar runs out 22.5km turn back 45km

First paragraph super safe till George then pretty safe

Second option safe

  • 11 months later...

I am going to be in the wilderniss from the 18 Dec to 5 Jan with road bike.

Routes will be doing:

N2 to Knysna

N2 to Sedgefield

Outeniqua pass

Old george road.

Old George road yes, all 3 the others, this time of the year would be very very very dangerous with the amount of traffic and the way people drive in SA at the moment.

From Island lake up the hill and towards karatara you can do exactly 50km because you can add 7km of smooth gravel to your ride - and link it with the old George road via wilderness and you have a safe 100km ride with enough hills to keep it interesting

Yup, be carrful on that N2, far too many people seem to think the yellow line is a regular lane on that route to Knysna.

I'll be joining from the 22nd, albeit from Plett.

Still looking for a "back alley" route to Stroms River Mouth - The R102 looks like a viable option for a large portion. I'll pop by "The Bike Shop" for some input though.

Looking forward to seeing fellow peeps and having a pedal in one of the most beautiful parts of the world  ^_^
