The timing seems fishy. Smells like a pap weskus snoek, what with 8 May being elections, and the DA going on about not needing Eskom power in the WC...

But thanks for the info.

ANC actually delayed Koeberg by a year by bombing it in ~1983!

I doubt that the power producer is going to be switched off to effect an election outcome.

However there is a power plant being built as a back up to Koeberg which might explain the road closure as turbines need to be delivered?

Popped in to Koeberg yesterday to find it was closed for cycling until the 6th May.

They are doing maintenance on the reserve roads.

about damn time. that road surface is shaite.  I wonder if the upgrade is in readiness for delivery of some rather heavy equipment due in a few months to a year or so..

it is for all the guys riding epic s-works bikes that have been complaining that the road surface is making Koeberg too technical

So they're finally going to turn it into a bona fide mountain bike trail...? It currently rides not too different to the tar road leading there all the way from wherever.

what?

After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan the world nuclear body or what ever it's called decided that there needs to be an independent power producing plant which can provide power on site to contain fall out at all nuclear power stations. Hence a gas fired turbine power plant at Koeberg.

However, the contract was awarded to Group Five, they have pulled out of the contract and have been placed under business rescue. Cannot say what Eskom plans to do to get that plant finished but it's a billion rand project and without it Koeberg would need to be switched off which is not really a possibility. In any event the state of the road might be the least of your problems after the elections as keeping the lights on will be less of a priority for the ANC after the 8th March, but lets see what happens.

The offsite emergency plant has always been a licensing requirement since Koeberg started operating in the 80's. The present standby plant is situated at Acacia ( next to the N1/N7 intersection). A new plant is presently being constructed in Atlantis. No new plant is under construction at Koeberg.

My son is employed by group 5 as an engineer to build that plant. I do think of him as a reliable source. At least he was still employed when he left the office this afternoon.
