Right, I asked various companies namely AA South Africa, Cycle Lab, ArriveAlive.co.za, Think Bike etc etc if they would like to donate reflective jackets and/or rear flashing lights to make the early morning cyclists out of Tembisa safer, while they have to negotiate the heavy early morning traffic.

Well Layton from the AA gave me a call, and offered to donate "Reflective Sashes", I was out on the road before 5am, and had handed everything out before 6am. Every cyclist was extremely appreciative for the donation, and at least motorists should be able to now see them.

I still see cyclists out there riding in the dark, not knowing that cars cannot really see them. The sashes I got from the AA were a bit on the "Small" side, and would not go over their backpacks, and some looked as though they were being strangled.

Anyway, if anyone out there has safty equipment that they are not using, please feel free to PM me with deets.

Thank you in advance.

Great stuff, you should contact the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, surely they should be able to make a donation in the commuter sphere as well

That's great, and I applaud your effort!  However, go back next week and see how many of them are still using it.

PPA did something down here with the Masi cyclists along Kommetjie Road; handed out helmets, rear lights and the same type of sash things as your picture.  It was very noticeable that morning with all the cyclists lit up and with fresh shiny helmets.  The next day most still had the lights on and about half were using the helmets.  I spotted one guy with the sash.  A week later there were only a handful still riding with the rear lights, I spotted two with helmets and none with sash's.

I don't know if the new kit had some kind of negative connotation within the community they live in or if it was just too much of a mission to remember the helmet or to turn the light off, or whatever other excuse there could be, but none of those things lasted very long at all.

I don't mean to put down what you've done, I'm just pointing out what I saw.

Reflective tape cut into strips with adhesive backing is not expensive. I put this on my bike wheels and also some strips on the bike, visible from the rear.
