Roof Racks - Thule or Holdfast

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I need some advice on roof racks. Which crossbars would you suggest and which bike racks would you suggest for the roof rack? The question is probably a bit broad, but I want to spend as little as possible for decent quality. Second question, where can I buy them (either new or second hand).

Thanks

Thule

Some of the bigger bike shops stock Thule ... at the same "recommended prices" as the Thule stores ....

At the Thule store the price includes fitment    The Thule store at Willowbridge Bellville does a GOOD job of the installation.  Excellent attention to detail.

I opted for the "nice" cross bars on the RAV .... should have gone for the standard longer cross bars.  Then you only buy new "foot packs", and you can use the set on your next car

Thule or Yakima will beat Holdfast with a stick for ease of use, but a 2 bike Proride with base bars will sting you about 12k.

If you're patient, set up an alert for yourself in the classifieds and wait. You'll find a bargain eventually.

Figure out what code of thule footpacks you need for your car by checking thule website.

Once that is known, check Gumtree and Facebook market place with those codes.

I got my thule roofrack footpack ,bars and proride racks x 2 for R5600 all in.

Was 3 separate deals over 6 week period but I saved alot.

Thats if you have patience....

Chalk and cheese.

With Thule you can change footpack when you buy a new car (and keep the bars + accessories). Or change the bar if you get a wider/narrower car. With Thule you get unrivalled quality. Thule provides a massive range of accessories. Everything is well thought through and well engineered (but not quite as good as next years' range  :w00t: ).

Via the grapevine: a certain South African roof rack company – not saying it is specifically Holdfast :whistling:  – had the Thule distribution many years ago. They copied the Thule designs and made their own inferior versions thereof locally. When Thule found out they cancelled the agreement and passed the distribution rights to someone else. Not the sort of people I like supporting.

*I've owned many bits from both companies, so in a reasonable position to compare. if your budget is an issues then maybe consider considering HF, only to reject your thoughts as madness and whip out the old credit card at your local Thule dealer.

Same same.

Have patience. Bargains pop up frequently so you need your alerts in place.
