Alps Tire Choice

What say the tire knowerers?

I have a Minion DHR 2 2.4 in 3c and a Muddy Mary 2.35 vert star for my France trip. The question is simple. Which one goes where? Front or rear.

No I'm not buying a Magic Mary.

Bike is an Intense M9 in the progressive setting. I'm currently running the Minnion up front coz that's a tire i'm familiar with.

Thoughts?

Dude is that a 26er? Can you still get 26er tyres that are new? Be careful because rubber goes stale and brittle over time. Last thing you want is to get a stiff Mary, muddy or otherwise.

Better to rather save your cash and rent an Enduro 29er. Those things rip and are much faster than a 26er DH bike anyway.

You'll have loads of rocks and large sharp stones so if the tyres are old you will tear the sidewalls. You also won't find replacements easily.

DB you know for sure there aren't many around here that would know what works in the Alps on a DH bike, my guess there's probably 10 if that much here on bikehub who'd know from experience.

I've been running DHF and DHR II and those are what i know, that's what I'm using for the Alps, i was advised that I'd probably go through the rear tyre so I'm getting my host in Switzerland to organise me an extra rear tyre

Last time in the alps we used these tires.

It was a climbing trip and not a biking trip though...

Haha. No I'm being serious. But I doubt I'll see a compelling reason to swap so minion front it is.

Don't you have A large or XL Enduro from 2016/2017?

Me? I have a jeffsy. You don't take that to the bikepark if you have a dh bike tho. Even if the dh bike is a mere 26er

Schwalbe, Maxxis and Conti all still make current 26" tires. most available locally too. Evo bikes, Stoke etc

edit. Just had a look at bike addict's site...you can ad WTB to that list too.

plenty of choice still.

I'd personally run the Mary at the front due to the Vert Star compound. If it was the trailstar, then that and the DHR2 in the 3c would be a case of meh, if it's on it's on. But the vert is mega soft and grippy (softer than the super tacky compound @ maxxis) and I reckon you'll rip through it if it goes on the back. The 3c has harder centre knobs, which should give it a bit more longevity.

my 2c.
