Garmin Topoactive Africa Update issue

Geared

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have searched the net for days now, and cannot find a solution.

I purchased both the Fenix 6x and 530 bundle recently, and although I have managed to update maps for all regions BUT Africa, on both devices.

various install progress and then error, I have tried removing Garmin Express, reloading express, removing devices , reloading devices, hardwired my Mac to fiber to make sure maybe it was wifi issues but I run a stable 120mb line up and down so not that.

I tried downloading basecamp to work around through there.

This seems to be a common problem, with a few workarounds I can't figure out.

being that Africa is a 4.8gb file and the largest of the lot, I assumed it was a storage issue, but I have well over 10gb on the 530 open, my understanding is that Garmin deletes the current map, and reinstalls the new updated one, and that the error seems to be that garmin gets a hiccup deleting the original map.

I am technically challenged so going into the back end to manually delete maps scares me.

I have the same devices (Fenix 6x pro and an Edge 530). I also get an error when I try update the Africa topo map on the edge 530 using my Mac (I've not bothered trying to update the 6x).

I had 6 updates available this morning.

I successfully updated "other items" by only selecting "install" for the item and not "install all".Screenshot 2019-12-16 at 1.23.42 PM.pdf

Trying to install the map - error.

I see the following error message in my iCloud sync. Ive followed the instructions to change the settings and still no luck. I still have 9GB available in my iCloud storage. Not sure why an update could fail (if related) because it cant't be backed up to the cloud.

ps. I got quite close to installing the update the first time I tried before it failed. Every time I try the update it jumps up to 96.7% complete within a couple of seconds and then fails. I will try and delete Garmin express and start from scratch. I will also go into the Mac and fully delete all Garmin files as some files/folders still hang around after uninstalling the app.

Any other suggestion/tips also appreciated. That includes anybody from Garmin SA should they read this thread.

we in the same boat, the biggest "success" in other words it loaded the longest before an error was now, when I deleted Garmin Express again, and then followed the YouTube tutorial on how to get rid of all the com.garmin.renu files, both in preferences and cache.

I downloaded Garmin Express again fresh, and added one device (530) and started the map update, it started well and on 0% and was going along well for about 10-12 min and then boom error.

hooked up the Fenix 6, loaded device and tried there again, same issue, error almost immediately.

apparently there is a work around whereby you can remove the map itself and reload fresh, but I cannot find where, and too scared I delete something crucial by mistake lol

Joh by far the most frustrating and annoying thing ever, wish I could blame Eskom this time, but alas must be something technical I am overlooking. I dont even know if it adds anything useful at this stage, but its annoying seeing one update pending every time I hook up a device

What I do with any map update that's available for any of my Garmin devices, is to first to the install to the local hardrive of the PC, and only then install it to the device itself using either Garmin's Basecamp or MapInstall. MapInstall works easier for me.

When you are in Garmin Express and at the page for the map you wish to update and install, expand the "Installation Options". When asked "Select where you would like to install the files." choose the "Computer Only" option.

After the map was successfully downloaded and installed on your PC, you can install it to your device, but also have the option to browse and explore the map on your computer at your leisure.

just an update from Garmin SA, they are aware of the problem, and it will be fixed in an upcoming update.

"Thank you for contacting Product Support.

Sorry to hear about your issue.

Regrettably, this is an issue we have picked up related to updating the TopoAfrica V6 maps on all the devices.

We are currently waiting on a forthcoming software updated, which will be provided by our software engineers in due time to resolve this issue. In the current time, your device is installed with Topo Maps that you can use.

Please can i ask for the following info so i can add you as an impacted user.

To Access The Sync Reports and App Diagnostics

  1. From you "My Day" Screen, tap on the "More" button on your Gamin Connect Mobile App. If you are using an iOS device, you would find this on the bottom right hand corner of your screen. If Android, it will be on the top-left of your screen, depicted using three stacked horizontal lines.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the list of options, till you select the option "Settings".
  3. Under the heading "Tech Details" you would then find the "App Diagnostics" and "Sync Reports" options there.

I would then require you to access each of those options individually, where you would select the "Share" button (depicted with a three dotted button) in order to attach both the Sync Reports and the App Diagnostics, as requested above.

Please may you include the Garmin Folder with your mail.

  1. Connect the Garmin device to the computer
  2. Press the Windows key + E on the keyboard to open Windows Explorer/File Explorer
  3. Select This PC (Windows 10 only)
  4. Open the Garmin drive listed1
  5. Right-click the Garmin Folder and select Copy2
  6. Right-click on the Desktop and select Paste
  7. Double-click the new Garmin folder on the Desktop
  8. Drag all Disk Image Files (.img files) to the Recycle Bin
  9. Drag the Map folder to the trash if present
  10. Close the Garmin folder window
  11. Right-click the Garmin folder on the desktop
  12. Select Send to
  13. Select Compressed (zipped) folder
  14. Attach the new Garmin.zip file on the desktop to an e-mail reply

NOTE: The Garmin.zip file cannot exceed 25MB when emailing it to Product Support. If Garmin.zip exceeds 25 MB after following these instructions, delete the following items from the copied Garmin folder on the desktop before compressing it again:

Hi Lads

Mine used to get stuck at 50% on "Activating Map" and while I was charging now decided to just try it again.

It went past the "Activating Map" where it used to give a error and continued with the next step op Copying Files. 62% and counting now.

Using Garmin Express

Fenix 6X Sapphire

Edit

It updated to 6 now with no issues

  • 6 months later...

My Garmin Edge 530 stopped showing street maps after its first sync out the box using Garmin Express.

Re-installing the Topoactive Africa v6 Maps successfuly didnt resolve the problem. After much frustration realised my garmin express version was out of date, after updating to latest version, then re-installed the Topoactive maps and eureka it worked .... great success!

Im quite happy with the Edge 530, ive had a long line of Garmin GPS devices and wearables, and this is really a great product, but wish they would go tetherless with their products. For instance Apple havent required you to attach your iPhone to a PC/Mac to Activate since the iPhone 4 ... im surprised in this day and age of WiFi and processor speeds, that Garmin still expect you to have a PC/Mac to get the best of your product.
