Cycling on the N4 from PTA towards Harties

Drove through to Harties yesterday and noticed close to 30 riders (not in one group) cycling on the N4 to and from Harties. If you were one of those please stop riding on a national highway.

Not only is it illegal but also very very dangerous.

Was that on the "old" N4 towards Pelindaba or the "new" N4 north via Doornpoort?

The stupidity of some people just fascinates me.

I won't go as far as throwing all cyclists in the same category, but f%#k we have some dumb-witted people sharing our love for bicycles.

The problem is that I am lambasted by non-cycling people for the actions of these twats, even though I wouldn't ever do this myself.

One could argue that there's a very wide shoulder to safely cycle on,  but I drive on that road at least once a month and cars and trucks use the yellow lane to allow faster drivers to pass. Just imagine you cycle along in your polystyrene shell of a helmet and a truck doing 80km/h drives into the yellow lane to allow a motorist to pass? You do not stand a chance.

The biggest group found yesterday were the folks from Exxaro on mountain bikes, that baffles me even more

The N4 via Doornpoort past Onderstepoort and Rosslyn - one would probably get onto the highway via Dr Swanepoel drive.

That is plain stupid. If it was the old N4 that would be a little less stupid as that road is quieter but this is a flippin' death wish.

It’s been going on for ages. There are cyclist prohibited signs as you turn onto the on ramps..Utter morons. I know 2 cyclists who have been killed on that road

In my opinion the N4 between Pretoria and Rustenburg is one of the most dangerous roads in the country. I live in Rusties and drive on it regularly, that road is a death trap.

I agree 100%, as I've witnessed some of the worst driving imaginable on that road...

My personal favourite would be the predilection for "undertaking" large trucks by using the space to the LEFT of  them in the yellow line.

Yeah, seen it. In fact i have seen trucks being both under and overtaken at the same time. Also the practice of overtaking into oncoming traffic based on the assumption that the oncoming driver will get out of the way.
