An alternative to chasing Strava KOMs

Recommended Posts

I wasn't going to start a new thread for this, but then got typing a rather long post and thought this could be a better option that posting about the latest KOM achieved/lost on Strava. So, with that said, is anyone using the StatsHunters addon (https://www.statshunters.com/) pulls your data from Strava?

Some cool alternative challenges to hunting those KOMs, and getting one to focus on riding, rather than racing, not that racing is wrong:

Badges (General and Location)

I'm sure many of you know about the Eddington number, well, it's here as a badge. I'm currently on level 8/9, so need to get the number up from 81 (miles) to 90 to achieve that badge.

Here's the cool stuff - Explorer Tiles

When clicking on the Explorer Tiles on Map, it shows this map (below is my worldwide reach, then southern SA). The current world leaderboard is sitting at 101x101. Vereeniging to Pretoria is only 50 blocks high, to put that into perspective for the locals (Vaalies).

The blue blocks are the current Max block, in my case 7x7 that are all stacked together to make a bigger cube/square. I could probably build a bigger block, but that would mean doing a few things, like riding through the townships close by, both on and off road.

So I guess the next step is to get climbing... 3000m in one ride the first of the climbing badges, of which I currently have 2821m as my highest climb on one ride. What is yours?

I saw it on someones Twitter feed a few weeks back (might even have been yours) and played around with it.

Shows some pretty cool stats, also showed up some anomalies like a particular local ride where I have an avg speed of 451km/h and a few where the GPS obviously dropped and then a long time later came back so you get a straight line right across a huge area.

I also like seeing the map laid out like that, give you a nice visual of the places you've ridden and how close some of them are to each other.

I remember pre-gps tracking days thinking about how close I've been to having ridden the roads all the way through to Sun City from around about 4-ways area, would be cool if I had the data for that.

Nice metrics :-)

Thanks Sir!!

Hopefully this thread will grow, with some awesome stories of legendary rides. While I enjoy challenging myself with a few local KOMs, this is a little more of that "just go out and ride" challenge.

I got it from the FastFitnessTips (FFT) feed. I might have shared it, can't remember.

Oh, one more thing I left off the original post. If you enable the Veloviewer extension for Google, and you’ve a Strava Premium user, then then tiles show when planning a route. Will post a screenshot from my laptop later.

Here's the route planned for a 9x9 grid... 170Km ride around town. Not as easy as I thought, but should make for a good ride, one day (when it's warmer. Even included a traditional stop as the Seattle Coffee in Melrose Arch.

O my Eddington number is sad.

Helps if you change to Metric though....progression is also easier...

Training for the a long race, like MD90 or DC, helps with the Eddington number.

That's nothing. I clocked an average of 1208.96 km/h on the 2018 JUMA.
