Which Bike Computer

PPM

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a new computer. I am currently using a Polar watch and would like to upgrade to something mounted on the bars for ease of reference.

I am in a quandary though. There is so much to choose from, however, I have whittled it down to 3 possibilities:

1. Wahoo Bolt

2. Garmin Edge 530, or

3. Garmin Edge130.

Can anyone give positive or negative views on these units.

Is it all getting so technical with all the data available that maybe the Edge 130 is the best route to follow???? I don't know.

Anyone? Please!

I recently received a 530 performance bundle, which includes speed and cadence sensors and HR strap. Vastly improved battery life, nice display, complete overkill in features for me. Nice unit.

Go to dcrainmaker.com and there are many reviews and opinions on these units.

I hear you. I am also wondering if the features of the 530 aren"t too much for me hence the turmoil.

Thanks for the heads up. I will check DC Rainmaker now.

As a current Polar user you could stay with Polar and go for the M430 bike unit. I have one and the v800 with heart rate strap. Never had a problem with both units. Look up Easy bike on the net for prices. (Both do live segments on Strava - reason I picked them)

PPM I have the 520 on my bike, and the 130 on my godson's bike.

If I had to replace mine today .... uhm ... not that easy ...

Back-up one step ... I also have the Polar M400 watch which I use with my commuter bike. It certainly ticks the boxes, except trying to get data of the small screen mid ride .... But for the commuter it is purely for record keeping and does the job okay.

It is this very need/desire for data during the ride which is why I prefer the 520 (in your case the 530) to the 130 ... the larger screen allows you more data fields.

And this is probably at the hart of each individuals choice .... WHAT do you want to see ?

I played with the route function .... not my thing.

My screen is set up to see:

- hart rate (for me this is key, as it allows me to count the matches ...)

- cadence (was very important when I started out, using it less now, but still like it)

- Speed (interesting to note, but not important to me, especially on trails ... though I can fully appreciate that it may be the key function for many other riders, especially on road)

Then in smaller blocks I also show:

- Distance

- Total ascent

- Time of day ... often wonder if this or time riding is more relevant ...

- Temperature .... this is probably the one that I have most often wanted to replace with one of the many other data fields ...

Now compare this to the data fields I show on the 130:

- Distance

- Speed

- Time of day

YES, you can reconfigure it to show more ... but then the fields become too small for me to read easily\comfortably ....

FUNCTIONING ....

The 520 works easier than the 130. Small differences, but you always needs to have one more look to make sure the 130 is actually recording ... switching off and saving the ride, again so much simpler on the 520. YES, I am nit-picking now. The 130 is a nice device, the 520 just works that bit easier.

TECHNICAL ....

battery level - THIS is my one serious gripe with the 130 !!!!!! You never know the battery level. During a ride you dont know the battery level, during charging you never know when it is fully charged ....

EDIT - AFTER THE LAST FIRMWARE UPDATE THE 130 NOW SHOWS THE BATTERY LEVEL

PRICE ....

Uhm, ja ... you obviously know the difference.

In summary ...

The small size of the 130 is nice, in terms of a less cluttered cockpit. So is its relative price. It certainly does most of what us normal riders could ever need. Can it display all the information that "you" want to see, and can it do so large enough to be easily visible mid ride ? Its lack of battery level indication is probably the main reason I would consider other options ....

For better or worse I am pretty much bought into the Garmin brand, else I would have seriously considered this - https://www.evobikes.co.za/components/computers/lezyne-gps-mini-usb-strava.html

Add another R1800 for hart rate strap and cadence sensor ....

Would love to see feedback from those that have used the Garmin units and the Lezyne ....

Did you check the Lezyne Mega XL?

Alas no. At this stage Discovery discounts are determining which units are possible.

Out of the 3 option, i would choose the 530. Garmin just works and the 530 will do all you need and more.

I currently use the 520, should i ever need to replace it, will be the 530 or whatever follows on from that.

From your ilst, Edge 530.

I've fallen out of love with Garmin head units a bit, so I'm using a Lezyne Mega C. Pretty dope. Super battery life. Only thing it doesn't have is the workout option (only syncing with TP or Today's Plan (who uses that one anyway?!)).

Hi there, am using Garmin devices & am comparing between the 810 & the wahoo element roam. Interested in your reasons for falling out of love with Garmin devices. Care to share? Cheers

id say definitely go for the wahoo elemnt bolt

by far the best bike computer out there

it may not have a color screen but it’s still an amazing bike computer

the zoom feature to view only certain data fields is amazing

and the LED lights at the top are pretty cool

Re the battery indicator - I was also very frustrated with this and ended up adding the battery indicator manually to one of my data pages. Obviously not ideal but due to the screen size its understandable to remove it as it would be taking up space on an already very small form factor.
